Tea & Fun Fair for Kids with Cancer

Victorian High Tea & Fun Fair For Children With Cancer, Sunday, September 24, 2017, 1-4pm, at the Best Western in Cobourg , is an inaugural event having been created out of the love of children and wanting to give those, 4-18 years of age, living with cancer a memorable fun-filled day in a true Victorian fashion.

My name is Elizabeth Fairley. I have always had a strong passion of things Victorian and have spent more than 30 years of my career in Toronto staging and organizing many exhibitions and events to share my love of this treasured era. In 2003, I followed my heart to Cobourg to live in a Victorian heritage home.

Three years ago,  at the age of 67, I was diagnosed with terminal Stage 4 breast cancer. I have been incredibly fortunate to be under the care of an amazing team of doctors, who have, with new drugs, been able to stabalize the cancer and give me some precious extra time.  The Victorian event for children is a ‘give back’ in appreciation of this extra time.

The horrible disease doesn't discriminate.  It affects so many young children. This event is not only for those children, but equally for their parents.  Watching a child die has to be the closest thing to hell there is, so the event is for their fond memories, as well.

Childhood cancer research  is grossly under-funded and only receives approximately 4 percent of the overall cancer research funding.  For this reason - beyond giving them a fun day - we will donate a portion of the proceeds to help support the research for childhood cancer.

With the support and sponsorship of The Rotary Club of Cobourg and the Best Western, along with more than 20 volunteer committee members, planning is well underway.  The programme includes a receiving line of a band with bag pipes, top-hatted footmen to escort the guests in, a town crier, white table cloths and wait staff decked out in "Downton Abbey" serving attire, 3-tiered stands of finger food in the true Victorian High Tea style, and even Queen Victoria and her hand maidens will make an appearance.  At the half way mark, the large dividing wall will be folded back to reveal an old fashioned fun fair,  with old fashioned games, live music and more fun food.  The children will even be able to play hockey with the mayor and deputy mayor!!! This is just a small snipit of what is in store... Let your imagination go and think of what this 3-hour delightful event will be for these young children!

It is my hope and prayer that we may make this an annual event and to create awareness for the need to help eradicate this awful disease - there is no place for cancer in this world, especially not in young children!

Please help us achieve our targeted goal of $10,000 by giving what you can and by sharing the link with friends and family.  If you wish to learn more about the event, feel free to reach out to us, as we would love to hear from you.

This event is a rare opportunity for these special children to step out of their every day reality and enjoy a bit of the fantasy world of Victoriana... I hope you will help make this event a reality.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely yours,
