Taylor Rand Heart Transplant Fund

Donation protected
So many know the smiles and joy that Taylor Rand brings to everyone she meets.  She comes from a wonderful family - Kim her mother, Darren her father and Emerson her younger sister.   The Rands have been an incredible family in our community and are always the first in line to help anyone in need.

In a very short time, Taylor contracted a virus which attacked and greatly damaged her heart.  The virus caused irreversible damage to both ventricles that required a thirteen hour operation to install two VAD pumps on either side of her heart.  The pumps are a temporary solution to keep blood flow throughout her body until a donor heart becomes available for a heart transplant.

Having spent time with Darren and Kim this week, they are laser focused on the minute by minute decisions that the doctors present to them as they spend every free second by Taylor’s bed side.  In addition, they are struggling to also keep their younger daughter Emerson in good spirits.

We, as parents, would never spare any expense to keep our children safe and alive.  Darren and Kim are no exception.  Taylor has the finest care possible and the Rands are blessed to be close to Children’s Health Care of Atlanta with the finest surgeons available.

Many Rand friends and I have been doing some research this week into the expenses related to a heart transplant.  The Rands have insurance, however, there are many expenses and copays that will present themselves now and in the coming years that insurance will not cover.    One major expense that is not fully covered is the transplant rejection drug medications that Taylor will need for the rest of her life.  Just this expense alone might run in the several hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Taylor has been through so much already.  Once she recovers, we want both her and her sister to go on to the college of their choice without that decision being impacted by medical expenses related to this life changing event.

I am fortunate to just be just one friend of so many to the Rand family.  In speaking with many of you this week, the most common question that I hear presented is – “What can I do to help?”.  Taylor and the Rands have brought so much joy and friendship to our community, we can help them by lessening the financial burden that this family will endure.

A handful of friends have set up a special account from a program that many of you might be familiar with called “Go Fund Me.”  We ask that everyone please consider making a donation to help the Rand family navigate this incredible tragic event.  For those who are parents, you know that you would do anything for your child in need.  We cannot control unforeseen events like the Rands are facing right now.  However, collectively as a team of friends, we can make a difference in the difficulty the Rand’s will endure today, and Taylor will face in her adult years.  Let’s all take this immense worry off the plate for the Rands and help them now, so that they can just focus on returning Taylor’s beautiful smile to the world very soon.
