As December approaches, we all get excited to be with our families and loved ones.  Unfortunately, we must keep in mind that not everyone will be able to have the same experience. As most of you are familiar with, BMS has a children’s hospital right here in New Brunswick, NJ. As heart breaking as it is, a good amount of children will not be able to jump out of their own beds at home to run downstairs and see what presents Santa left, but instead will wake up to a beeping monitor. So, because of that, let’s try to make this holiday special for every child in that hospital!

Most of you know that Chirag  and myself have been teaching assistants for Organic Chemistry at Rutgers for the past four years. We have run four charity reviews in the past two years with the rest of the chemistry-teaching faculty. In the fall of 2014, we held one that raised over $2,200 for the Children’s Hospital (we were able to buy them a PlayStation that year too!). We were also able to collect over 800 items of food that was donated to Elijah’s Promise (a food kitchen) in New Brunswick. In the spring of 2015, we collected over $2,300 for the victims of the Nepal Earthquake. In the fall of 2015, we collected over $1800 for the Children’s Hospital and a whopping $5,700 was raised for various homeless shelters across New Jersey. Our most recent charity review was held this past spring and it raised over $1500 for the victims of the Ecuador Earthquake. Over the past two years, orgo students, family and friends have raised over $13,000!

On Sunday December 11th, 2016 we will be hosting another Charity Review from 8AM - 12pm, in Hill 114 on Busch Campus.  We will then be moving from Hill to SERC until 8pm. The review will cover all the material from day 1 and will go on for a total of 12 hours! We are asking that each student bring a monetary donation of any value when they attend the review. As soon as the review is over we will be going out and buying toys and other things the hospital needs in order to make a wonderful holiday for all the children and their families.

This is, of course, voluntary but even a dollar would be immensely appreciated. If you are on the Rutgers campus on December 11th and would like to donate, please stop by HILL 114 from 8am to 12pm. If you can't make it, please donate to the gofundme page we have set up!

I would love it if you could share this with your friends, family, on other forms of social media (by sharing this page or by word of mouth). The children have been so happy to receive all the presents we were able to get for them in the past. Let’s keep that tradition going! We are always told to do well, now let’s do some good as well. Let’s make sure that every single child in that hospital wakes up with a smile during the holidays!

Happy Holidays :)

Best,
Akash!
