Dear friends, acquaintances, and members of the writing community,
My name is Allison Thai, and I earned a spot in the Taos Toolbox writing workshop! But I need your help to become a part of the class of 2019.
What is Taos Toolbox, anyway?
Taos Toolbox is a 2-week residential writing workshop that focuses on novel writing, with attention to topics such as plotting, pacing, and selling longer works. Taos is also particularly suited for writers who've previously attended other workshops and still need to hone their skills. I attended Viable Paradise in 2017.
Dates: July 7-20, 2019
Location: Angel Fire, New Mexico
Instructors: Walter Jon Williams, Nancy Kress
Guest lecturers: George RR Martin, Emily Tippetts
Class size: ~18 students
What are the funds for?
The $3600 tuition will cover 2 weeks of room and partial board. I think I can pay ~1/3 of that out-of-pocket, hence the $2600 goal. In case there's an excess in funds (which would be absolutely amazing), I will funnel that into covering travel costs and food.
When do you need it by?
The deadline to pay the tuition is March 16. (deadline may be extended; I emailed Walter about this)
Why do I need to ask for help?
I currently work as a medical scribe in the ER. I love this job to bits, but it pays minimum wage. Definitely not enough to offset the cost of Taos Toolbox tuition! I am also saddled with student loan debt since earning my BA in 2016, and I'm also trying to pay for front-end accident damage to my car.
Are you really a husky? What do you scribble?
Nope, not a husky. Not by outside appearance, anyway. I am a 2nd-generation Vietnamese-American and the oldest daughter of Vietnam War refugees. When I'm not writing, I'm working towards getting admitted into medical school or an anesthesiologist assistant program. The fiction I scribble tends to address my fascination for cultures and worldbuilding, as well as a love of animals and my appreciation for bittersweet yet cathartic narratives.
Any bit you can contribute is a step closer to turning this opportunity into a reality. Thanks so much!
Sincerely,
Allison Thai
