Tammy Footen Payne  WALDORF, MD
Currently living with Stage IV breast cancer (mets to lungs).  Adjusting to the "new normal" which means not only treatment for the rest of my life, ongoing side effects from current medications, but also lingering side effects from chemo and surgery.  Read my blog at tammy-payne.blogspot.com to see what living with a terminal illness is like.  :)

Update 6

I have so many thoughts rolling around in my mind right now, and they're not all necessarily connected. So, I'll limit this update to say a huge THANK YOU to my wonderful village. I am now $750 closer to being able to have the dental work done. Perfect timing, too, as even the lettuce on the tuna salad sandwich I had for dinner last night was difficult to bite into, and caused pain.
Those other thoughts roiling around in there? I sense a blog post coming on. It will tie together the topics of:
"You're terminal? ...but, you don't look sick."
Getting back in to "mom mode" and reconciling it with the new normal.
These topics tie together with my son's emergency appendectomy. The blog post will have to wait until tomorrow, though, because I've been at the hospital since early yesterday morning, and this chick is beyond exhausted and is going to bed at -- yes -- 6:30 on a Saturday night.
Again -- THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH.

Update 5

It is with trepidation that I post this current update. It's been about a year and a half since my last chemotherapy session. Since then, I've been trying to strike a balance with the side effects that I hear can take a few years to go away, the side effects of my current maintenance medications, and trying to get back to "normal".

This particular update is about my teeth. My first x-rays post chemo showed all kinds of things going on in there. My four front bottom teeth have cavities below the gum line, so they have to go. There are also a myriad of other cavities that need to be filled. As I was doing pretty well with my oral health up to that point, we all agree (my dentist, hygienist, oncologist, etc.) that chemo is to blame. So, I've been putting this off for a year because, even with my insurance, it's pretty expensive. Why do I want to do it now, after waiting about a year? They are starting to hurt. To be quite honest with you, I can now not bite into anything. I am perfectly content to let my teeth rot out of my head, but medically speaking, having all of those holes in my head (hahaha) just invites infection. I have finally come to terms with the fact that this needs to be done. My current treatment plan has my out of pocket expenses for all of the dental work at approximately $5,000. I am checking into assistance from organizations, such as the American Cancer Society. I am knitting furiously. I am checking into having the work done at the dental school in Baltimore. It will be cheaper, but there will still be a cost, which I frankly cannot handle right now.

You all have been so generous that I have hesitated to post this update, but I can't put it off any longer. I need your help.

“Oh, wait”, you say, “don’t I see her post pictures of her and her family out at dinner? Don’t I remember them recently taking a vacation to Myrtle Beach? Don’t they go to Redskins games every year?” Yes. Yes, you do. Those meals out are covered by gift cards received at Christmas. That vacation to Myrtle Beach was through a wonderful program called Little Pink Houses of Hope, and was given to us at no cost. It was also the first vacation we’ve had in six years. Those Redskins tickets have been in my family since before I was born, and are still in my family. They are no longer in my name, and all but one game is sold every year.

So, let me qualify this. One of the reasons I've hesitated is that I don't want to feel guilty every time I go out to lunch with my boys, or in February when Jimmy and I will go out to eat to celebrate our birthdays. We don't spend money willy-nilly; we are not extravagant in our spending. So, if you are going to judge every dollar I spend, please -- I'd rather you not help.

Also, if you want to help but, for whatever reason, can’t, that’s okay. I’ve seen fundraising pages shared for some of my friends, and have felt really bad that I can’t help them. I thank you for everything that you do, and I do try to pay your kindnesses forward.

The surgery date is looming. We're asking for your help as this is creating a financial hardship, between buying things in preparation for recovery, and Jimmy being out of leave at work.
