'Tamils of Lanka: a timeless heritage' exhibition

The 19th of May 2019 will mark the ten-year anniversary of the end of the war in Sri Lanka. It was a period of immense trauma and violence; tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were killed. Many more were injured, displaced and detained in camps in the final months of the war and for years afterwards. Ten years on, there has been no accountability for the enormous loss of life, for war crimes and for human rights abuses.
Across the world, in May, the Tamil community will hold memorialisation services and activities in order to honour the dead, educate the younger generation and keep the memory of atrocity alive. It will be an important time for collective mourning, reflection and education. For our part, the Tamil Information Centre is arranging a two-day exhibition named ‘The Tamils of Lanka: a timeless heritage’ in London on the 18th and 19th of May. We are fundraising to support this work.
The aim of the exhibition is to showcase Tamil history, culture and heritage alongside the impact of the conflict and the human rights abuses suffered by the community. We focus on the resilience and vitality of the community despite the devastating impact of conflict. Our concern is with the younger generation of Tamils, their knowledge of the conflict and their sense of identity. Community workshops and lectures will animate and contribute to the exhibition programme. We also hope to reach the wider Tamil diaspora and international community, both in London and with a traveling exhibition in the years to come.
Crowdfunding will make this possible! The vast majority of the work is volunteer-driven and we have no institutional funding. We are working to: collect materials, art and artefacts; transport materials safely to London; produce films and audio content; create an online space to store content (an online museum); prepare and deliver creative workshops with Tamil children; and fund logistical arrangements.
