The Tahoma Robotics Club (Bear Metal Robotics) is a robotics team out of Tahoma High School in Maple Valley, WA. Bear Metal participates in the yearly FIRST Robotics Competition, which is one of the many programs run through FIRST, an international organization that promotes engineering excellence and creativity in grades K-12. Overtime, Bear Metal has worked its way up from humble beginnings in a school portable to being a leader within the Pacific Northwest. In the past two years, Bear Metal has competed at a higher level than ever: earning six wins, including one on their field at the World Championship in Houston, Texas in April 2017 and at the Pacific Northwest District Championship. In the 2017-18 school year, our team grew to have 61 members from grades 8-12 and 18 adult mentors.
As we continue to climb a ladder of success, our team has been running into some problems. Our current milling machine is in bad shape. Manufacturing students spend more time fixing the machine than they do using it. This is seen as a potential threat to our future success as it inhibits our ability to meet deadlines as well as having costly repairs. With the new machine, we will be able to provide better technical training opportunities to our students and it will allow us to give more support to local teams.
We are looking for funds to purchase a new milling machine for our participants and students of the Tahoma School District. The machine that we are trying to get, the HAAS VF-3, will total up to $80,000. We need to raise an additional $20,000 by June 1st or our team will lose $40,000 in matching funds. Any support is greatly appreciated.
