We are excited to announce that Tacoma Aikikai has purchased a building! To build it into a full-time dojo, we are reaching out to ask for your support. There are many ways you can help us open our doors in February 2019.

1.       Donate funds. Help our new dojo with startup expenses. We are looking to raise $16,200 to fund the following:
-          Expanded tatami training mats ($4000)
-          Subfloor ($1500)
-          Lighting and Electrical Upgrades ($5000)
-          Kamiza ($1000)
-          Operable windows ($3200)
-          Exterior signs ($1500)
-          Column removal

2.       Donate time and talents. We need your skills and time to help us build the new dojo, including carpentry, woodworking, plumbing, electrical, and general labor.

3.       Like, follow, and review us. If you haven’t had the chance, please follow us and share your experience with prospective members by giving us a review:
-      Google maps
-       Facebook: Aikido Tacoma Aikikai
-      Yelp
-      Instagram:  @tacomaaikikai
-      Email List

4.       Come train in the new dojo at our Winter Seminar with Diane Deskin Sensei, January 18th-20th.

If aikido training is the fire that ignites and inspires us, then a dojo is the hearth that forges that fire and keeps it burning strong.

After two years of building an aikido community of sweat and fire, Tacoma Aikikai has realized our new, permanent dojo home. With the support of our members and the larger aikido community, we are purchasing the old Elliott Building at 2502 S. 12th St, Tacoma, WA 98405 to build a lasting aikido community in Tacoma’s Central District.

The new, 3,000 square foot dojo will host a 70-tatami mat. With our own location, we can become a permanent, full-time dojo offering day and evening classes, apprenticeship opportunities, and a sizable location for regional training events. Most importantly, a new dojo gives students the foundation to develop and thrive, growing the aikido community.

Two years ago, we started training on 28 tatami. Our dojo lived in a closet on the third floor of Urban Grace church and came to life when we pulled it out two days a week. Since then, Tacoma Aikikai has grown to 40 members, including kids, teens, and adults. We still pull out the same 28 tatami (and put them away again) five days week for twelve hours of kids, adults, weapons, and iaido classes.

It’s because of you that this dojo purchase was possible. We are grateful for all the help we have had to get to this point, and we are excited to continue to train with you and to share aikido for decades to come.

Gassho,

Ea Murphy

It's almost here! 3 days to go until our Grand Opening. We've been training in the new space for a few weeks now, and it's already starting to feel like home. Since we've opened, we finished the genkan (entryway) and put down some flooring over the concrete. The mat space feels and looks wonderful. After designing, constructing, and keeping our fingers crossed about how the subfloor would work, we are so grateful to have a firm but generous surface to support our training. One thing's for sure, I will never look at another mat without thinking about how it was built and all the labor that went into it. (Thanks Brad for your brialliant design.)

Our next project is to build the kamiza. During the building renovation, we salvaged a >150 year Doug fir that formed the central beam in the building. With some love and refinishing , this piece of old-growth history will become the center of our dojo.

On such a busy street, we've already had many people from the neighborhood (the neighborhood that Eric and I also live in) who have stopped to visit. It's so exciting to give aikido visibility in our community - I can't wait to see who walks in the door.

We've been working long hours to get to this point, and look forward to celebrating on Saturday. For all of you who can't make it to join in the party, know that we are thinking of you and how you have helped to make this all possible.

At $12,300 in online and offline donations, we are at 76% of our goal. The building fundraising will keep going as we continue to build a lasting aikido institution in Tacoma.

In gratitude,
Ea, Eric , and Tacoma Aikikai members

What a difference a few months, some long nights, and an enthusiastic work party makes! Today we have achieved our dream of opening a dedicated aikido dojo in Tacoma. Our hearts are full of all the love and support we received so far along the way, and we are humbled by the opportunity to share our love of aikido in a permanent location. Many, many thanks to everyone who has made this possible.

Since December, we’ve made it 76% of the way to our fundraising goal at $12,258. These donations brought us the critical tools we need for training – entirely funding our mats and subfloor, contributing to bringing our electrical up to code, and paying for our signs to be installed next week. If we meet our goal in raising another $3940, then we will fund the operable windows we need for summer heat, flooring for the dojo, and meditation supplies for zazen training.

We have a long way to go, but just like every day, tonight we will train.

With gratitude for all your support,
Ea, Eric, and Tacoma Aikikai members
