Who's That Lady? We Found Her! Her name is Ms. Toya Graham
Transparency: We knew this was very important, which is why we contacted the Baltimore TV station immediately (before the first donation was made) and provided our contact information and requested help with identifying and locating the mother. They helped us reach out to the daughter, but we did not get to speak to the mom until she returned from New York City, where she had appeared to do multiple news interviews.
Friday's Update (May 1, 2015): Yesterday, we were finally able to speak to this Lady/Mom, after being in touch with her daughter for a couple of days. She has the link and can read your loving messages and continue to monitor the progress here so that she can receive 100% of the proceeds. (See her video recorded message (above) after she was stunned to see the amount of support on this page.) Her 'Thank You' message is based on those who have supported this effort, based on the story from WMAR TV in Baltimore: http://www.abc2news.com/news/region/baltimore-city/toya-graham-mom-who-beat-son-at-baltimore-protests-speaks-with-abc2
This is the ONE and ONLY OFFICIAL Online Fundraiser for this mom, who made national headlines this week for searching for and finding her son to bring him safely home in the midst of unrest in Baltimore on this past Tuesday, involving several young people (while, at the same time, standing in front of police to help shield them from rocks).
Thank you for helping us show our support to this family. We also ask that you continue to pray for Freddie Gray's friends and family, as well as ALL of the people of Baltimore, MD, as they move into the next phase, following today's announcement of charges against six police officers. I have seen Online Fundraiser pages for some things that are not worth giving two cents to fund. This video is an example of the kind of parent who checks report cards; the kind of parent who prays for her child's safety; the kind of parent who'd rather use tough love, up front, than to have to visit her child in prison. Think what you may of the hitting, but it's equivalent to snatching your 2 yr-old by the neck to keep him from running across a busy street... to save his life. My family would like to personally donate to this mom, because she represents the kind of parent who would do whatever it takes to save her son. She didn't care about the cameras, she cared about her son! We write this as a family of color with careers in law enforcement, but more importantly, we write this with love for the mothers and the fathers who will not stand for foolishness! There is a safer way to protest your concerns, but rioting and looting are not the way! Kudos to her. Who's that lady? Help us find her and she will get 100% of these proceeds from GoFundMe: http://www.gofundme.com/t76kks We are in touch with the tv station that originally recorded this video WMAR to find this lady, so we can give her this donation. Our condolences to ALL families who have lost children to violence and excessive force by the bad apples in the police community. There are still good apples in law enforcement. And, there is still hope.
I just want everyone to know that I called the news room that did the interview with Toya and they reassured me that Toya herself gave them this link. They also gave me her daughters email address, I emailed her so hopefully she gets the title of this changed. But the news room assured me that this is the link she herself gave them.
I emailed WMAR and GoFundMe and they both said that the group is legit and plans to give all proceeds to Toya Graham. The person I emailed at WMAR and who berified it is Mark Allman. I feel comfortable it's legit (still wish they would put her name on the page though).
Her name is Toya Graham. Since #toyagraham is a single mom of 6, I'm sure she can use the money. Her actions are perfect for the upcoming #mothersday. She was interviewed by CBS today, and will be a guest on tomorrow's CBS This Morning. She says she doesn't want her son to be another Freddie Gray. I'll upload the videos.
What I like about her is that she refused to play the race card or even the anti-police card. She says that this was not a Black vs White issue, but an anti-brutality issue. Furthermore, she said that she was upset at at her son attacking the police because one day, she may need their help. Why would they want to help someone who attacked them? And her daughter is hoping to become a police officer.
This is the link from WMAR. They have confirmed this acckunt is legit. When you click the link sxroll down the page and you will find the link for this gofundme. http://www.abc2news.com/news/region/baltimore-city/toya-graham-mom-who-beat-son-at-baltimore-protests-speaks-with-abc2
Ok, can we not compare this woman to Rosa Parks, please. Ms. Graham physically assaulted her child, a young Black man, on national TV for the world to see. It is beyond ironic that she gets applause for violence on her child who was allegedly engaging in violence. So two wrongs make a right, it would seem? The humiliation and psychological damage she did to her son goes so much deeper than many are either willing or capable of understanding. Here was her son, frustrated by a system that looks at him as a criminal and a commodity; and here you have his mother, the one who he would expect to nurture and protect him, treating him just like the system that frustrates him. Is that what he needed, to have his mother shame him and slap him in the face? As you all donate money to this woman, I surely hope she doesn't pull a fast one on you and spend your hard-earned money on a new purse or new clothes, but actually uses it for the betterment of her children. For they are the ones of true value, not her.
