A Smile for Megan

My name is Karen Douglas and I have the distinct pleasure of working with an amazing person named, Megan. Megan was born with a bi-furcated cleft palate and hearing impairment. She has no sense of smell or taste and cannot bite or chew  hard crunchy foods. Her speech is not easily understood even by those who are familiar listeners which can be quite frustrating especially when trying to express herself be it at school, work, or even in social situations.  
Megan was put up for adoption at birth, but not before some Doctor's began the long process  of correcting her condition. Due to legislative red tape and closed adoption documents, not much is known about how many and exactly what type of surgeries Megan had before she was adopted. 
Fast forward over 30 years, and Megan is still living with a bi-furcated cleft palate and all the challenges associated with it, on a daily basis. This condition along with all it's  physical limitations has also robbed her of her self-esteem and self confidence. Once you know Megan you see nothing but the sweet, shy,  beautiful woman that she is.  She spends most of her time working as a Teacher's Aid in a school for severely developmentally delayed students. She also works a second job as a caretaker of young adults with multiple disabilities. She is a giving, positive, energetic force dedicated to the welfare and well being of the children/young adults that she works with on a daily basis. Megan never has a bad day. She works two jobs just to make ends meet but she would give you the shirt off her back.  Megan has done so much for so many people that I (and I am NOT alone) feel she deserves a smile! LITERALLY! She deserves the smile that was intended for her beautiful face!  However, this comes at a premium. She is going to require multiple surgeries by multiple surgeons across multiple surgical specialties. My cousin, an RN at NY Presbyterian-Weill Medical Center has facilitated medical appointments with some of THE best Doctor's this city has to offer and they have taken Megan under their care. Megan has insurance but the out of pocket costs are going to be exorbitant.  It is going to be a long, painful process for Megan, but as always, she is optimistic and truly grateful to have this opportunity. I hope that with your help we can raise enough money to see Megan's smile!
