TEAM UP TO CLEAN UP MBARE

The genesis of this clean up campaign was through a combined desire on the part of two groups of youth to do something to improve their surroundings here in Mbare.

The first group of youth is a group called ¨I am Mbare - Keep me Clean¨ that is composed of various youth drawn from all over Mbare, who were brought together by a workshop run by a local NGO and decided to continue meeting even after the workshop ended, Their aim was to make an impact in their local area by doing something about the pernicious problem of waste management.

The second group is the youth group from St. Peter´s Mbare Catholic Church, who had the same intuition. With time their numbers have swelled and the clean-up campaigns have attracted youth from various other churches, CCAP, Methodist, AFM and the Salvation Army as well as other non-relgiously affiliated youth  drawn from various soccer clubs in Mbare.

The situation three years ago....


So far we have been able to erect a formal concrete waste containment area that with co-operation from local council allows for daily collection of refuse. This has vastly reduced the eyesore that was mountains of accumulated waste and significantly reduced the risk of waste related disease outbreaks.

Where we are now.....



The area that was a wasteland is slowly being transformed into a park and recreational area and we have big plans to build a spectator stand for the ajacent soccer pitch, constructed out of recycled tires. We also hope to set up a container village that will give space for recycling projects to flourish and overall contribute to building Mbare's very own eco-village.  Together with your help we can make this dream a reality.
