Symphony 5 Return to Middle Earth

Donation protected
Dutch composer Johan de Meij, who achieved world fame with his Symphony No. 1 The Lord of the Rings, has been commissioned to write a new symphony, to be premiered under the baton of the maestro himself at Valparaiso University on November 3, 2018. The new work is entitled Symphony No. 5 Return to Middle Earth, and is scored for large wind orchestra, soprano soloist, and choir, and again inspired by the mythological world of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The 110-piece wind orchestra of Windiana Concert Band and the Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band, and the 200-voice choir of high school students from Kankakee Valley, Lowell, Michigan City, Munster, Washington Township, and Wheeler, as well as soprano soloist Maura Cock have been practicing diligently. Maestro de Meij rehearsed the entire group in Valparaiso on September 9.

The first funding campaign to finance the commission closed on October 1. We are thrilled that $15,000 was raised, and a check for this amount will be presented to Maestro de Meij.

We have started this second funding campaign to get us closer to our commission goal.

All donations (small or large) are welcome! Those who contribute at the levels of $250, $500, $1,000, or more will be recognized in the published score. They will be forever linked as major contributors to this one-of-a-kind artistic event.

Please help spread the word on social media by sharing with your network!
