I'M GOING TO GHANA!!!!

Hello ALL!! My name is Sha Perine and I am going into my junior year at the University of Washington. In just a few weeks, approximately on July 16,2012 I will be leaving for Ghana for four weeks to study with about 17 other students in a program with the School of Social Work and the Office of Minority Affairs.  We will be exploring our individual interpretation of identity and the meaning of "Sankofa" which means to go back and retrieve. Ghana being on the coast of West Africa and a place that many were taken and brought into slavery through the middle passage, this trip will be life changing; not only because of the exposure to a different culture but also because I will discover a piece of me that I have never been given the chance to. Though I am not sure where in Africa my ancestors were from, going to Ghana, I will be closer to understanding my identity on a much larger scale than just as an African American.
