Swayze-A Moment That Changed A Life

Tax deductible
Saturday Oct. 13th, 2018 was a day that changed the life of puppy Swayze.

This little boy was gravely injured and lying in a ditch when a couple driving by noticed him. They stopped to help, loading him in a box with towels.  They went to the closest house to find out the breeder was just going to do a homemade euthanasia on the pup.  As luck would have it, the worst day of Swayze’s life soon became his best day.  Critter Crusaders was contacted and the breeder allowed these wonderful folks to take the pup.  Lori Kendricks, a great friend of CC’s, met Swayze in Center Point and drove him to Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center for emergency care through CC.

It took the doctors quite a while to determine the extent of his injuries and stabilize him.  Lung contusions, a horribly fractured femur, a luxation of the sacroiliac joint (where spinal column meet posterior pelvis), a large pelvic fracture and blood in his bladder which could be a result of muscle damage.  A laundry list of injuries that will require surgery.

CC asked the great staff at EIVSC to name the severely injured pup in case he did not make it.  He needed his own identity and Swayze became a puppy who now had a name and home home in the hearts of many people.

During the evening, Dr. Miller called us and reported that the pup experienced a small pneumothorax (collapse) of a portion of his right lung.  They evacuated the airway and he has remained fairly stable overnight with IV fluids, pain control and oxygen.  Surgery has to wait due to his fragile lungs.

Swayze is in critical condition but as an organization, these complex cases are where we do our best work.  Critter Crusaders has faced many financial challenges over the last few months due to the vast numbers of gravely injured animals we have successfully cared for.  Once again, we ask for your assistance to share this pups story, to donate if you are so fortunate, and to send collective positive thoughts as we begin Swayze’s journey of recovery.  One animal....one moment in time...one chance to make a difference.  Hope is always present and healing is on the horizon.

This puppy is loved.  We thank you all ️
