Mom's Cancer Treatment

Back in February of 2015, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in her left breast. Because she was only 40, it was recommended that she have a double mastectomy to prevent the cancer from coming back in the other breast later on in life.  In addition, all of the lymph nodes were removed from her left side. After surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, reconstructive surgery, and two additional surgeries due to complications with the radiated tissue during the healing process, we were finally past this physical/mental/emotional battle. Her cancer had been Triple positive: positive for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER2. Hormone therapy treatments can help prevent a return of the disease so she has been on a medication called tamoxifen which helps stop cancer from coming back by blocking hormone receptors.

However, we've recently found that she has now developed cancer in several bones and also in her liver, derived from the original cancer and also triple positive. And so our journey begins all over again. But this time, the financial commitment is much greater. 

She will be taking an aromatase inhibitor to actually stop estrogen production and force her body into menopause.

Update: medications have changed. “Ibrance” has not been FDA approved for mom’s type of cancer. Starting intravenous therapy and eventually surgery will take place to remove her ovaries and further reduce hormone-responsive growth.
