FROM SELF-DETERMINATION TO GENTRIFICATION

with SURVIVAL GUIDE season 2 underway
listen to season 1 here

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Indigenous self-determination has, over the last 40 years, lived and grown in the neighbourhoods of Redfern and Waterloo. But, even so, this community has not withstood the incremental spatial inequality caused by creeping gentrification. From 40,000 strong to a small 300-400 people, the community is being quickly displaced from their neighbourhood, at a time where support and recognition for Indigenous rights is on the rise. How and why has this occurred, and what form is the resistance taking?

We’re looking for your help and generosity to raise the amount necessary to mount a full on TAKE OVER of 107 Projects for one day and night. To take the space and time to reflect on the impact this community has had on our city, our country and our lives.

We need your help to make this happen

We need to raise $5000 before the end of May to host a day of Art, Poetry and discussion centred around the history of Redfern as the Blak heart of this country.

The program will consist of:

Food and drink prepared by local Aboriginal catering – ‘Insert name’

A community panel of foundational members throughout Redfern’s history to locate Redfern’s importance both geographically, politically and historically.

Blak Rhymes Poetry event and open mic for community accompanied by local acts.

An exhibition of archival photography (family photos, community events) and protest posters alongside a professional Portrait Photography Project documenting the existing aboriginal community. To begin the very important work of collecting the stories and lived experiences of this place, something that will live on past this singular event.

It is the fight for the physical centre of Indigenous Australian struggle that sits within the consciousness of an entire nation. The resistance of repeated dispossession of Indigenous land.
