Surprise Salvation

During my most recent trip to St. Lucia, I found myself alone outside a hotel whilst waiting for a friend who was running late. A van stopped “are you ok? I saw you 15 minutes ago when I arrived and you are still here, do you need some help?” I smiled, politely declined and assured the kind man that I was perfectly fine. Then I saw the logo on the van: Salvation Army and my smile lit up even more. I volunteer with Salvation Army in East London; it is a charity close to my heart.

Since I’ve been back, I tracked down the kind gentleman and have arranged to spend some time at his Salvation Army. St. Lucia is a beautiful island with the some of the most welcoming people I have ever met. The landscapes and beaches are stunning, the foods delicious but like in all countries, poverty exists. When out of work, you count on the support of your family as there are no government benefits. And when you have no family, you rely on charities such as Salvation Army. SA St. Lucia is funded almost exclusively by donations and income from the thrift shop. Their focus includes but is not limited to: a feeding program for the indigent, a basic school and day care.

During my upcoming trip in March, I would like to surprise Captain Derrick with a donation. Every little will go a long way. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for anything you can spare. I will keep you updated and share my images upon my return!
