Surgery Fundraiser for Kat Danio

December 31, 2018 I found myself in the hospital seeking help for my declining health. Over the next several weeks I found myself trying to recover from a serious infectious bacterium called clostridium difficile colitis.  The infection weakened my immune system and led to the onset internal shingles, which led to viral meningitis. Instead of working as a yoga teacher to pay off medical bills my days were spent regaining my ability to walk, think and function.

During my recovery I continued to experience constant pain and exhaustion. I was finally diagnosed with very large fibroid tumors that fill my entire pelvis and severely compress my bladder and bowel as well as my upper abdominal organs. After seeing multiple doctors the only solution provided to me was hysterectomy. Removing such large tumors is very dangerous (blood loss and risk of injury to surrounding organs) and requires a skilled surgeon.

The medical community feels the uterus and ovaries are useless beyond childbearing years. However, much research exists that demonstrates reproductive organs serve a vital function in a women's long term health and well-being way beyond the childbearing years. When all is said and done I am not willing to electively submit to a hysterectomy when there are appropriate and safe alternatives to treat benign fibroid tumors.

Finding a skilled, experienced surgeon to remove only the fibroid tumors was quite a challenge. After much research, I finally found vascular surgeon Dr. Tirso del Junco. Based in Los Angeles, California, Dr. del Junco has performed thousands of bloodless fibroid surgeries (cases even more complex than my own) in a procedure he has developed called Female Alternative Surgery. Dr. del Junco has never had to convert an open myomectomy to a hysterectomy because of complications or blood loss. Unfortunately, my health insurance (HMO) covers absolutely nothing for out of state procedures/surgeries and, additionally, there is no out of network coverage.

I have never been a person to reach out to ask for financial assistance. However, paying off medical bills from viral meningitis and the loss of income from being out of work for several months has depleted my accounts. Now I find myself desperately seeking a way to cover my surgery in Los Angeles on June 3, 2019. I have used my frequent flyer miles for my travel to and from California. I am left searching for ways to raise funds for the surgery is $22,000 and my VRBO rental for two weeks is $1,915.

I am so grateful for the wonderful people in my life. Even if you can not financially assist with my fundraiser I still thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting your supportive comments, prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery. Your words give me courage and strength as I move closer to surgery day.

During the pre- and post- surgery process I want to keep everyone updated to my progress. Therefore, on my website's (see URL below) blog I am posting written updates as well as videos. This way I can stay in touch and answer any questions along the way.
