Support Matthew's Recovery

Donation protected
Yesterday, my youngest brother Matthew's legs were crushed when he was run over by a semi-trailer. He had been called to fix the truck on a highway in Chinchilla in Queensland. For as long as I can remember, that's what Matthew has done; he has fixed things. He makes broken things work again. Now Matthew is the broken thing and he needs help.

Matthew was working near the front wheels of the truck. The driver thought Matt had finished, so he started the truck and drove down the highway. The front wheel of the semi drove over Matt's left foot. As Matt was dragged along the road, he managed to grab hold of an axle. Then the truck started to turn and the second lot of wheels ran over his legs, groin and stomach. When he managed to fling himself free of the truck, he lay helpless on the side of the road. A passing car saw Matt and stopped and called an ambulance. The 10 minutes or so that Matt lay on the side of that highway in 40c/104f plus degree heat felt like the longest 10 minutes of his life.

Matt was stabilised and taken by ambulance to Chinchilla Hospital, where he was stabilised again. After that, he was airlifted by helicopter to Toowomba Hospital thanks to the fantastic services of Careflight.

Matthew made the news for all the wrong reasons. http://www.chinchillanews.com.au/news/man-run-over-by-semi-trailer-in-chinchilla/3140641/

Matthew is in Toowomba Hospital now awaiting surgery. He is lucky to be alive, but he has sustained serious leg injuries. He left leg is in a cast from hip to ankle and the breaks in that leg will be pinned and plated tomorrow. The swelling in his right leg is so severe that the doctors may need to cut the leg open to release the pressure to stop the skin from bursting. We don't know how long he will be in hospital or what the road to recovery looks like. And we don't know when he'll be able to walk again.

Matthew is self-employed. He fixes really big machines and trucks. We hope that one day he will be able to walk and return to his trade, but for now, he is in hospital, with no income for the forseeable future and a mountain of medical expenses coming his way in addition to everyday bills arriving.

We are reaching out to friends who would like to help Matthew so he can afford the medical care he needs over the coming weeks and months and to help cover his expenses to give him the best chance of recovery.
