Our strong willed, nine-year-old Kayden Benjamin Van Nostrand has been experiencing painful headaches since September 2017.

She has had several doctor appointments, and has undergone neurology testing, with all of her neurology exams tests normal.  However, Kayden still emphasized to us that something was not right.  The headaches continued to alter Kayden’s life. The end of February her Neurologist ordered an MRI. The MRI was completed Sunday, March 11th and showed that Kayden had a tumor on her Cerebellum (Brain Tumor). She was immediately admitted to Seattle Children’s ICU with surgery on Monday, March 12th.

Kayden’s surgery was six hours in duration and was the longest six hours of our lives. Kayden had a successful surgery, and a follow up MRI showed total resection of the tumor. We are happy to report that pathology results show the tumor is benign. The tumor was a grade 1 pilocytic astrocytoma. This means the chances of it ever coming back is very low. We want everyone to know that she is doing amazingly well, considering, and we truly believe that we would have fallen apart if it weren't for her strength and bravery. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

This week has been one of the most difficult for our family, but the amount of support Kayden has received has been amazing. Many of you have reached out to offer your best wishes and support and it means the world to us. As we begin to discuss transitioning from hospital to in-home care we are blessed to know Kayden’s amazing community will help aid in her recovery.

While Kayden’s initial prognosis exceeds expectations, it will take some time for her (and us) to get back to normal. Much to her dismay school, softball and other activities will be on hold for a little while. The exact duration of her rehabilitation is difficult to determine, but our Kayden is eager to check the boxes on her road to recovery!

Unfortunately, Kayden will need follow up physical therapy, MRIs, CT scans and a school tutor. We don’t yet know how much time off work will be required of us before Kayden can transition back to school and activities. We suspect we will need to continue to rely on family and friends for additional help. Your support and time are greatly appreciated, others have created a Go Fund Me page to help the family cover some of these unforeseen expenses as well as out-of-pocket expenses for their time at Children’s Hospital. We are grateful any assistance you can give during this time of hardship.

We appreciate all of you and thank you in advance for everything! Team Kayden!
