Ernest's Recovery Campaign

Donation protected
In July 2018, our Ernest- famed for his heart of gold, mediocre jokes and sartorial finesse- was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). This news came as he and Lulu had recently celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary and welcomed their beautiful son, Theo.

The outpour of support and well-wishes have been taken in with gratitude that they are surrounded by so many loved ones. A team of medical professionals is working hard to ensure that Ern is on track for a healthy recovery.

A donation in any amount will be generous and gratefully accepted to support Ern, Lulu and Theo during this time and in the months ahead. Lulu has depleted her maternity leave, so the trio is currently being supported by Ern's disability income.

8/7/18 UPDATE- Round one. His intrepid spirit and determination have weathered one round of chemotherapy; he is currently recovering.

8/14/18 UPDATE- Round two. Chemo is repeated every Monday. Side effects become milder with each administration. Blood tests show a positive response to the drugs! He essentially has no immune system and is susceptible to all sorts of infections. A very low White Cell count allows the body to regenerate itself and create new and healthy blood cells. He continues to take his morning daily dose of pills (around 10 pills with breakfast, yuck) which help combat the risk of infections and viruses.

8/17/18 UPDATE- Fluctuating energy levels. Today is a low-energy day.

8/18/18 UDPATE- Today is a high-energy day. Ern spotted dancing with his new partner, Barbara the IV. These two have become inseparable.
8/20/18 UPDATE- Round three. Things are going well! Ern is experiencing some nausea, but his anti-nausea meds are effective. He is off IV fluids and is no longer attached at the hip with Barbara (his IV pole). He now has more freedom to walk around the unit and visit the patio’s healing garden.  So far he’s lost about 20 pounds but his appetite remains stable. The nutritionist even added a smoothie twice a day for extra calories.  His hair is starting to shed and Ernest is actually okay with that. Instead of the usual hat/beanie cover-up, he’s considering wig options. He’s open to suggestions! I suggested a toupee, and his friend Terence suggested a blonde wig.

9/6/18 UPDATE- Ernest has been home since Saturday and is slowly recuperating. He has his bone marrow biopsy today at 2:30 and We get the results in approximately one week. This will determine if he needs a bone marrow transplant or continue with chemo. (We hope he doesn’t need a transplant). Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers today!
