Support the THS FIRST Robotics Team

Beschermde donatie
Tehachapi High School's FIRST Robotics Team, the Cyber Penguins, just won the highest regional award at the Las Vegas Regional Competition and is now headed to the FIRST World Championships in Houston, Texas!  At the World Championships, the team (and their robot) will compete with hundreds of other teams from around the world in this multi-day engineering extravaganza.

In addition to the competition, students will meet representatives from colleges and future employers that are looking for people just like them!  They will also get a behind the scenes tour of the robotics lab at the Johnson Space Center in Houston!  The team is seeking support to help pay for the registration ($5,000), airfare ($3,000), hotel accommodations ($2,000) and rental van ($1,000) for this amazing opportunity.

THS Robotics Team 585, the Cyber Penguins, has returned from the Las Vegas FIRST Robotics Regional Competition with the top regional award, the Chairman's Award.  The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST.

The Chairman's Award was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become scientists, engineers, and technologists.

The Cyber Penguins have had long standing outreach events in Tehachapi, including week-long LEGO summer camps for 1st-3rd graders and 4th-6th graders; the Super Science Saturday Expo in November; elementary programs, including the Hour of Code for every elementary school in Tehachapi; and their Junior Robotics program, which offers students from 1st through 8th grade access to age-appropriate competitive robotics programs free of charge through a variety of venues each Fall. Through these programs and others, the THS Robotics Team is endeavoring to open doors for their younger peers, encouraging them to enjoy and explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) hands-on.  These events are integral to the program for FIRST Team 585, as reflected in the team mission: "In partnership with our school, community, and industry, FIRST Team 585 provides opportunities for students of all ages to learn skills in STEM through hands-on experiences and exposure to applications of engineering."

Participation in the FIRST Robotics Competition fulfills the core tenet of the vision of the Cyber Penguins: "through hands-on exposure to STEM, students become critical thinkers, skilled technicians, and leaders of innovation."  The student members of FIRST Team 585 learn industry-relevant skills in design, fabrication, programming, and project management while using the same software and equipment that they will encounter in the workforce. Industry internships, job shadowing, and behind-the-scenes tours solidify the relevance of their experiences while strengthening their skills and knowledge for continuing their educations. Thanks to the support of their corporate sponsors, the Tehachapi Unified School District and the community, the THS Robotics program is making a difference for the children of our area and beyond.

Having won the Regional Chairman's Award, the Cyber Penguins are among a select group of teams that are eligible for national recognition at the FIRST World Championships. While their robot competes at the world championships, representatives of the team will share their program, their successes and their impact as compete with other regional winners to earn the Championship Chairman's Award.

We greatly appreciate your interest in helping the students travel to Houston to represent the team, Tehachapi, the high desert, and Kern County.  Thank you for your support!
