The McKinney Center is a space that provides a welcome environment for people of all ages and backgrounds to share in the making of art, promote art experiences as essential components of individual growth and community life, and adapt to our ever-changing society. Our center brings a quality of life to Jonesborough and the surrounding region. We are asking for you to help support our programming and events.
Here is a story from one of our scholarship students’ parents on how the McKinney Center impacted their daughter:
“We got a phone call from our daughter’s teacher at Lamar. The teacher asked, ‘What is she doing different?’ and I didn’t know what she meant at first.” Mrs. Johnson explains that she asked the teacher for clarity, and the teacher reported that their daughter, who has always been shy and soft-spoken, and has rarely interacted with others, was now answering questions in class, talking with other students, and stretching herself more to learn difficult concepts, where before, she had been quick to give up easily.
“The teacher said, ‘I’m wondering what could be making such a difference,’ and my husband and I both knew the answer. It was the art program we had her in at the McKinney Center.”
At McKinney Center, when she walks out the door, she is smiling. She says, “Mama, you are going to be so excited about what I did today.” She accomplishes something at the McKinney Center, and it motivates her to do more in other places.
“Our daughter is making all A’s now. She volunteers to read to younger children, she helps the teacher, and interacts with other children at school. And she has won awards for good citizenship. I can’t say enough good things about the program at the McKinney Center. It has made all the difference.”
The Johnsons also said it was important to note that their daughter was a scholarship student. And it is because of the McKinney Center’s dedication to making arts accessible to everyone through their scholarship program, that their daughter was able to have this life changing experience. She continues to take classes at the McKinney Center, and continues to grow and develop her artistic skills, as well as life skills.
Having heard this story, you can see why the work we do is important. Beyond art classes and offering scholarships, the McKinney Center brings events and programs like the Artists Exhibition Series, Art in the Park, Masterpiece Mingle, the Yarn Exchange Radio Show, an annual StoryTown play, about 20 outreach events throughout each year, and much more. The McKinney Center provides a space to celebrate diversity, tell our stories, de-stress from everyday life, and prepare our youth for the future.
We need your support. Without you we cannot continue to provide quality art classes, workshops, exhibits, community events, and more. It is only with your help that we can sustain all that we do.
