Robin's Road to Recovery.

As many of you may know, my mother, Robin Grove, was admitted to Sinai Hospital on April 26th to have heart valve replacement surgery. During the procedure, the doctor also found that she had hardening of the pericardium which also needed to be addressed. A hospital stay that typically lasts 5-7 days after this type of procedure has turned into a much longer ordeal.

My mom has been intubated three times since the surgery and now has a trach in place. She is receiving her nutrition intravenously through TPN, has an NG tube through her nose for her medication, and is currently on IV antibiotics. After the surgery, the doctors found that she has two blood clots in her radial arteries. When they tried to use blood thinners, she began to have gastrointestinal bleeding. They then conducted a colonoscopy and endoscopy to locate the cause of the bleeding and found two large ulcers in her colon. While all of this was being discovered, they recently placed her in an isolation room because they suspect she may also have Tuberculosis. Just when we think one thing is resolving, something else pops up. She continues to work with physical, occupational, and speech therapy. She's not able to talk yet and communicates by writing.

My mom and her husband, Mike, have already started to feel the financial burden of this long and traumatic event that has no end in sight at this point. My mom stopped working for about one month before the surgery because the surgery date was pushed back twice. Mike is unable to stay with her during the week because he has to work to support them both. He spends his weekends at the hospital with her. All of her children try to visit her at least once a week and more if possible. Other family has tried to visit her during the week as well since she is alone Monday -Thursday.

Many of you know that my mom has always been very charitable. She has organized dozens and dozens of fundraisers for those in need through her work at Waffle House. She always puts the needs of others before her own . Most recently, she worked as the Unit Manager at Williamsport Waffle House in Williamsport, Maryland. She has a large following of loyal regulars that have followed her from the many Waffle House locations she has worked at in the tri-state area.

The hospital bills, mortgage, gas expenses, insurance costs, and other bills continue to rise. Please consider helping us to support our mom and Mike while she continues on a long road to recovery. Every little bit helps! Even gas gift cards and restaurant gift cards would be so helpful as we continue to travel to see her. If we are able to reach our goal, we will donate a portion of the money raised to the American Heart Association. Thank you so much.
