Friends and family,
We are so pleased to report that Pete Butler has qualified to compete in the 2018 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, which will be held in Varese, Italy on September 2, 2018. Pete has been racing bicycles since he was a teenager. With discipline, and thousands of miles of training, he won the 2015 and 2017 Gold medal in the 50-54 age group in the National Senior Games. Then, in May of this year, he succesfully qualified to compete in the UCI World Championships at the US qualifier, a 100 mile race with nearly 10,000 feet of climbing.
It’s been quite a ride!
Since Pete plans to make the most of this opportunity, competing against the best 50-54 year old men in the world, he is seeking your support.
With that, we are hopeful that friends and family will come together via GoFundMe, chip in, and help get Pete, his cycling equipment, and his support crew to Italy to represent Team USA. Your contribution will go towards travel and race expenses such as lodging, flights, registration, USA Cycling uniforms, bike shipping, coaching support, car rental, and healthy meals.
This request is simply our way of asking the community to join in and be a part of Team Butler.
Additionally, any unused funds (including any money that goes over and beyond the target request) will be used to further the memory of Steve Reker, who died on March 28, 2017 in a senseless cycling accident. We miss Steve so much. He was a dear friend to the Tallahassee cycling community, and he was a kind, and loyal, father, spouse, friend and teammate. Steve was one of a kind and we miss his smile. As a way to honor him, any excess funds that are raised will be used to remember and continue the support of the “Three feet for Steve” awareness initiative focused on cycling safety and advocacy.
