MdS Casa Program for Homeless Teens

Tax deductible
Support Monte del Sol Charter School's Casa Program for homeless families and families at risk of homelessness  in Santa Fe, NM!

100% of funds raised for our  Casa  Program go directly to students and families who qualify for assistance under the McKinney Vento Homeless Education Act.   We now serve 42 students and 23 families.

Our Casa Program provides groceries, school supplies, backpacks, snacks, winter coats, clothing, baby items, and more.   Our school provides free tutoring by experienced teachers, and free breakfast and lunch.  We refer students and their families to counseling, food pantries, medical services, and many other community services, and we are there when they need someone to talk to.   Our goal is to see students succeed, graduate, and go to college.   100% of 2018 graduates in Monte del Sol's Casa Program are now in college.

We are a public school serving 360 students in grades 7-12.   More than 10% of our students currently qualify as homeless under federal law.   We have a high Mexican and Latinx immigrant population.   We serve families from Santa Fe who cannot afford  our city's high housing costs, families living without heat,  families at risk of homelessness  because  parents/guardians are in ICE detention, families who are refugees from violence,  and students who are homeless because of abuse, sexual orientation, and gender expression.

Their needs are great: food and adequate shelter, help with transportation, tutoring, and warm clothing.  Clothing is often generously donated, but there is never enough food.

No donation is too small!

Sometimes we are asked if Monte del Sol families are served by Santa Fe Public Schools' wonderful  Adelante  Program.   It is a great program--it has provided invaluable mentorship to our Homeless Education Liaison.   Under  NM laws,  Monte del Sol families can go to Adelante only if they have children in SFPS district schools.  Many do not.

Homeless students are invisible in plain view in our public schools.   No one wants to look homeless, and most homeless teens are indetectable among their peers. There are 12,000 homeless youths in New Mexico, that we know about.  The actual number is much higher.

For these students, school is often the only place they can get a hot meal and a feeling of routine and normalcy.

Thank you for supporting our Casa Program!
