Support my work with the Sanctuary Caravan

Donation protected
Asylum seekers and refugees fleeing violence and persecution need safe passage.

On December 16th, 2018, I will fly to the San Diego/Tijuana border to volunteer with the New Sanctuary Coalition and its Sanctuary Caravan. We are a group of volunteers from all over the country who support the thousands of asylum applicants currently waiting in Tijuana to be processed. As a volunteer, I will be trained to conduct a pro se legal clinic to assist people to advocate for and represent themselves as they seek asylum.

I am asking you to support my work with the Sanctuary Caravan.

Your donation will help me cover travel expenses in San Diego/Tijuana. My goal is to raise $500. Any money I don’t use for travel will be donated to Border Angels, a non profit organization that advocates for human rights, humane immigration reform, and social justice along the US-Mexican border (https://www.borderangels.org/).

Why I choose to join the Sanctuary Caravan:

The right to migrate and seek asylum is fundamental. I believe that the current violence, both physical and bureaucratic, being directed at asylum seekers who have gathered at the border is immoral. All Sanctuary Caravan volunteers are committed to nonviolence, and we are equally committed to standing for the liberty and equality of all people.

I am an undergraduate at University of Massachusetts Amherst studying Geography and Latin American Studies with a focus in migration studies. I am currently volunteering at a refugee resettlement organization in Amherst, MA. This past summer, I spent two months volunteering at La72, a migrant and refugee house on the Mexico-Guatemala border, working with asylum seekers, mostly from Central America. The year prior to that, I spent a semester living in Tucson, Arizona where I participated in Earlham College’s Border Studies Program and interned at the Southside Worker Center. I have been involved in immigrant rights advocacy and worker rights organizing in Tucson, AZ, Santa Cruz, CA, and my hometown of Boston, MA. On this trip to the US-Mexico border, I aim to use my experience in performing intakes/interviews, desert aid, interpretation/translation, know-your-rights trainings, as well as humanitarian aid assistance.

I would so appreciate any contribution you are capable of offering to support my work in solidarity with asylum seekers at the border.

Again, funds that you contribute will go directly for my travel to assist migrants on the Tijuana/US border.

Sanctuary Caravan approach:

Our approach is unique. It was developed by the New Sanctuary Coalition, the New York City-based parent organization for the Sanctuary Caravan. Volunteers in the mobile Pro Se Legal Clinic are trained to sensitively work with people to represent themselves through the immigration process. This approach empowers our migrant friends to be their own best advocates. We seek legal advice with experienced attorneys in our community, as needed, but our friends seeking asylum are at the center of all of our work. All of us volunteers are extensively trained.

If you want to support the Sanctuary Caravan directly or learn more, you can do that at  www.sanctuarycaravan.org.

Thank you very much for your support, it means a lot!
