On March 19th, Michelle was seated on a balcony when her chair fell down backwards from a height of 6 meters and she landed on her neck and was paralyzed from the neck down. After being unconscious for 3 minutes, she was able to regain speech and ask to be taken to the hospital. Upon arriving at a local clinic, it was suggested that she needed a CT scan so she was transferred to St. Peter’s Nsambya where it was discovered that she had a slippage in her spinal cord and cervical spine injury of C3, C4, and C5. On March 21st after doing some research on the best spinal treatment option, Michelle was moved to Mulago Spinal Ward where traction and successful surgery were performed and she was bedridden for 2 weeks. She left the hospital and moved to her brother’s house to recover but a few days later was rushed to International Hospital Kamapala (IHK) as she was experiencing difficulty breathing. Doctors discovered malaria and bacterial infection and treated her.
Since then she has been stable but needs intensive care and physiotherapy for at least 3 months so she can hopefully walk again. Doctors have said that her chances are good with the right care and she has seen progress and now has limited use of her arms.
Michelle has a strong, warm, and beautiful spirit that lights up any place she enters. She is full of faith and spreads joy to those around her. We hope to support her and her family through this journey of recovery.
We are seeking support for Michelle as follows:
700,000/= Ugandan shillings per month (for 3 months minimum) for medication (approximately $188) x 3 months= 2,100,000=/ ($562)
100,000/= Ugandan shillings per day (every day for 3 months minimum) for physical therapy (approximately $27) x 30 days x 3 months= 9,000,000/= ($2410)
