Support Mabel's fight against Leukemia

Donation protected
My dear friend, not only to me, but to so many needs your help!

No one knows what lies ahead in our future and for Mabel this twist came about this past December 2018 when she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Due to two rare mutations, a bone marrow transplant is her best treatment. Right now she is going through a series of chemotherapy until donor is ready; after the transplant she will be in critical condition for 100 days with a total recuperation period of almost 1 year.

Mabel Barba, for those that know her, is just an exceptional super woman, an amazing wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend! For those that have worked with her, they know her dedication, commitment and talent that has led her to her success in her career (Just google her and you will see all her amazing work!).

From what I have learned about her industry is that her line of work is different from what most of us are accustomed to. She works under contract (like for a specific movie or series) which means that the project can't wait for her to heal. Each project is very demanding and require a minimum of 60hrs a week. Since December she has not been able to accept any work and will not be able to do so for a while.

Her loving husband is the only one working, trying to take care of their bills and all the expenses related to having a 22 month old beautiful baby girl. But without her income, her out-of-pocket expenses and co-pays are adding up to thousands of dollars and will only continue to add up as she has a long journey ahead of her.

Mabel is such as strong individual!! She has taking this battle against Leukemia head on with such a positive attitude.  I know many times she is the one lifting the spirit of her friends and family who are sadden and distraught by her situation, instead of the other way around. As such, I know it is hard for her to ask for help. So that's why we, her friends, are asking for help for her and her family on her behalf!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND YOUR PRAYERS!

I also wanted her to share her story in her own words to here it is:

One day in December 2018 I woke up thinking I was getting a really bad cold. A trip to the ER confirmed I had pneumonia and a compromised immune system. My bone marrow was producing immature white cells (cells that make up the immune system) and not enough red blood cells or platelets. I was admitted to the hospital immediately, the doctors suspecting I had a type of blood cancer. After a bone marrow biopsy, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia is an emergency blood cancer that requires immediate aggressive chemotherapy.

I was referred to The Blood Marrow Transplant Group of Georgia at Northside Hospital Atlanta, GA where I started my first chemotherapy treatment. Three different chemotherapy drugs were used to clear the immature cells and to reset my bone marrow.

Cytogenetics testing showed I had two mutations. One of the mutations puts me at risk of a relapse in less than 3 years with a 20-30% survival. Therefore, my best treatment plan is a Bone Marrow Transplant to produce a brand new immune system.

While I wait for my donor to be ready, I have to go through Conditioning Chemotherapy to keep the mutations away. I am recovering from my second Conditioning Chemotherapy.

The potential bone marrow donor is my mother. She is half my match and more in-depth testing is in the works. Northside Hospital BMTGA program is one of the very few Cancer Centers in the world that perform Haploidentical Transplants, since this is a newer treatment.

After Bone Marrow Transplant, I will be in critical condition for approximately 100 days. My body and my new immune system will have to get used to each other. The scary complication is Graft vs Host Disease, which is when the new cells attack the recipient. Immunosuppressant medication will be required to ease the transition. I will be weak and prone to all kinds of infections. If all goes as planned, I will have a working bone marrow 6-9 months after transplant.

Medically, I am in the best hands. My family and local community have my back logistically and emotionally.

However, financially...it is unsettling. I have great medical insurance but out-of-pocket expenses and co-pays are easily adding up to many thousands of dollars.

If you want to help me financially, please donate through this site.

Thank you for your generosity, love and prayers!
