Support Liz in Her Fight Against Endometriosis

Donation protected
Elizabeth Kmali is a 26-year-old mother, wife, sister, friend, rehabilitation/mental health therapist, and daily fighter against the painful condition called Endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition where the layer of tissue that is normally found within a female’s uterus, grows outside of it, creating lesions that become inflamed, bleed, and break down the affected areas. This happens mostly within the reproductive organs, but in rare cases (such as Liz’s), it can also occur in other organs in the body, causing intense pain, scar tissue, and other complications. Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women living in the U.S., and still, it is highly misunderstood within the medical community. There is no known cause OR cure for Endometriosis and treatments are limited, invasive, and come with various other complications.

Liz has been living with chronic pain and symptoms of Endometriosis for over 10 years. She has tried Western medicines and treatments in combination with a healthy and holistic lifestyle, all while still keeping up with her roles within her family, at work, and within her community. Liz has the opportunity to attend an AMAZING specialized program at a center in Florida that offers a holistic and comprehensive approach to the treatment of chronic diseases. Liz and her family are hopeful that if she can attend, she will be able to find the tools to manage her condition once and for all.

However, Liz and her family have once again been hit with the ongoing financial burden of medical treatments. After living pain free for the past two years following the birth of her daughter, Rayna, Liz’s pain has suddenly returned, and the condition itself is worsening. Liz has been working as an employee of the state, but is currently in the midst of seeking extended disability leave.

And so, Liz’s community of friends and family have decided to come together and help to further support our dear friend! Liz has been trying to find a way to attend this treatment center in FL for years, in hopes that it will offer new methods of managing the symptoms of this condition, but her insurance will not cover any out of state treatments. Whatever you can spare will go to good use, in either paying off their medical bills while Liz seeks further treatment at home in CA, or if we raise enough, to help send her to Florida so she can attend a specialized treatment center! Liz is the strongest, most giving person we know, hands down. Liz and Joey have opened their hearts and their home to so many of us in so many ways, and we want to offer them our support as a token of our love and appreciation for the amazing people they are. If you'd like to know more about Liz's story, please read on below!

Thank you for your contribution!

Liz was officially diagnosed with Stage 4 Endometriosis in 2010 while she was in college. However, she had been experiencing intense pain and undergone her first surgery when she was just 15-years-old. Liz’s condition affected her high school, college, and graduate school education. She was forced to drop out of educational programs, miss classes and events, and give up many “typical” experiences that most people have growing up. She has too many stories to count ending with an ambulance picking her up because she passed out from pain, or being so opioid-induced that she couldn’t attend class (not to mention surgical procedures and recovery time). The stress and anxiety, and overall effects on her body and well-being are far more than anyone should ever have to endure, especially at such a young age.

Liz found some relief after her surgeries, but the pain would always return after about 3 months, and the whole process would begin again. Liz has had almost a dozen surgeries as treatment for Endometriosis since being diagnosed in her teens. Since then, she made the decision with her doctor to explore other options, such as hysterectomy (removal of her uterus and ovaries),

“After having 4 miscarriages and being told by multiple doctors [since age 15] that I will always have chronic pain and difficult pregnancies, I believed I would never be a mother. So, after discussing it for years, my husband and I started therapy to cope with this, and scheduled a hysterectomy. You can imagine my shock when I was scrubbed in for surgery, and was sent home because I was 6-weeks pregnant.”

Liz and Joey welcomed their beautiful and healthy little girl, Rayna Sol. After being free of endo pain during her pregnancy, the pain returned after Rayna was born. Dealing with the pain along with severe Postpartum Depression, Liz was committed to finding a more permanent solution for her and her family. With her doctors’ support, Liz decided to proceed with a hysterectomy.

“...with multiple scares of passing out from pain at work and at the gym; my everyday life was being directly impacted. I opted for having the hysterectomy, which is what graced me with two wonderful years of pain free living that I hadn’t had for over a decade. Although surgical menopause was induced (accompanied by early-onset Osteoporosis), the hot flashes and mood swings felt like nothing compared to what the pain did to me.”

Fast forward to now—we are sharing Liz’s story because her pain has returned once again. This past month Liz needed to be hospitalized. Taking strong pain medications, Liz is facing yet another episode of not being able to work, be a mother, or truly be herself.

The fear, depression, emotional/mental stress, physical pain, and trauma that we have watched our friend go through is heartbreaking. As her support network, we ALL want to HELP. We want her story and awareness about Endo to be heard. All Liz wants is to advocate for her fellow “Endowarriors” (term coined by Endometriosis support groups) and push medical providers and insurance companies to diagnose and support patients sooner. “One of the most frustrating parts about this is when doctors told me, ‘it was all in my head.’”

We’ll be honest, it took a little bit of convincing to get her to agree to starting this campaign, but that’s just the kind of person she is. No matter what Liz is going through, she has always been there for her family and friends. This carries over to her patients at work, various communities she is involved in, and anyone in need. Liz, this is the LEAST we could do! Thank you for letting us tell your story! We love you!
