 FAIRFAX, VA
John Bauman was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) on February 14th, 2017 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Needless to say this was shocking, life changing news for John and Meghan. In addition to it being very rare for a 28 year old to be diagnosed with AML, he also has a particularly difficult sub-type to treat. His AML has been resistant to all treatment thus far and will ultimately require a bone marrow transplant once he is in remission. John has undergone 2 rounds of chemotherapy at Inova which failed. In April John and Meghan picked up from their home in Virginia to move up to NJ so John could continue treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK). At MSK he has now undergone two more rounds of high intensity chemo therapy inclusive of a clinical trial, which have both failed. During this time, the chemo treatment and 4 months of being in the hospital took it's toll on John and he underwent surgery to deal with complications. As of June, John will now be entering his fifth round of treatment and next steps are becoming more uncertain and they are going "off script" to fight the cancer. The ultimate goal is to get him to remission so he can receive a bone marrow transplant which is a year long process of chemo, radiation, transplant, and recovery.

But John is more than this, he is a husband, dog parent, son, brother, and friend. He is a strong, positive, silly, light-hearted, stubborn guy who refuses to give up and continues to fight like hell. John is a pre-clinical researcher at MedStar Washington who just wants to get back to his daily commute and have some normalcy. He is a hockey playing, sports enthusiast who can put together a mean fantasy line up. He has remained a steady force to be wreckened with and has never let his faith in his doctors or himself waiver. John's wife and partner in crime Meghan, has been by his side every step of the way. Besides being his caregiver and advocate, her other job is at Vibrent Health where she is a Program Manager working directly on programs for cancer survivorship and precision medicine because she has always envisioned a future where no person or family should ever deal with cancer or the burden of a life-changing disease. To literally be in the same shoes as the patients she works with every day and their families has given her more drive and purpose than ever imaginable and she continues to fight like hell.

At this point John and Meghan have been fortunate enough that their insurance has covered a majority of medical costs. And what costs have not been covered and additional burden they have been able to cover with some sacrifices. However, with each treatment failure the next steps become more uncertain, they also become more financially burdensome. Just to give you an example of what they are up against the drug he needs next is $13,000 a cycle (1 month) and they do not know how long he will be on it, it could be months. The cost coverage was denied by their insurance. They did however, receive coverage from the pharmaceutical company for this first round, but again there could be potentially more to come. Also, bone marrow transplants are not typically fully covered by insurance and costs can upwards of $900,000. With unpredictability comes unpredictable costs.

Meghan and John want to thank everyone for their generosity and thoughtfulness that you all have shown. I know they are hesitant to ask for help but with John out of work indefinitely, uncertainty of future treatments, current bills, and specifically paying the out of pocket costs for the uncovered treatment and transplant we are hoping to raise funds to support them so they do not have to stress about financials and can solely focus on getting John healthy. Core to who they are, their promise is to ensure any funds not used to support John's treatment, transplant, and care will be directly donated to support other young adults battling cancer.

Thank you for your support and generosity,

Kirsten (Meghan's sister)

John and I were just floored by the amount of support, outpouring of love, and thoughtfulness that our network of friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers have shown us. I wish we could write a thank you to each individual or even just pass along a hug but it seems nearly impossible with over 300 generous donations. I wish we could really put into words how deeply this has moved us and lifted John's spirits during this time. He was so moved to see so many familiar names and people from all parts of his life come forward to lend support and words of encouragement. He has a small army of support backing him and he will win. The donations give us assurance that we can take on whatever may come our way.

Thank you again for the countless shares on social media, emails, calls, texts, and awareness that you have brought to John's story. We can never sincerely express our gratitude.

Love,

Meghan and John

A message from Meghan: "I want to take a moment to extend our sincere gratitude. I understand how tangible Go Fund Me is and there are no words to describe how much everyone's help will be of support to John's care, but I think it is more than that. It's seeing John's lifetime friends, hockey community, extended family, friends of friends of friends, and quite frankly complete strangers come together that has moved him to emotions that he has yet to express on this journey. It's moved us to tears. He feels so loved and supported, he really has everyone on his team. Fight on, John! Thank YOU. This helps us only focus on conquering what is next. We are literally going to do whatever it takes and we appreciate that you all recognize and support this. "
