Jadon’s Journey to Health

Wendy, Matt, and Jadon are a sweet family that has been dealing with monumental repercussions and expenses due to their son Jadon’s illness which he has been struggling with for over a year but which has only recently been diagnosed. After months of unexplained illness, 13 year old Jadon was finally diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), a genetic disease which makes his body unable to detox biotoxins. Specifically mold, both alive and dead, is extremely dangerous for Jadon. This has resulted in the family needing to leave their home in Maui and purging all belongings, clothing, mementos, toys, and anything else that might be contaminated. They have moved to Matt’s parents’ house in California and are basically starting over from scratch. Medical bills, mold treatments, lost wages, and moving costs have caused the family to acquire $16,000 in debt. On top of this, they need to raise $14,000 in funds to carry Jadon all the way through his healing journey.   This includes not only replacing all of the items they’ve had to purge, but also urgently needed mold testing of their new home, installation of air filters/equipment to make their new home safe for Jadon, replacing old carpets, medication costs, and ongoing medical treatments. There is a light at the end of the tunnel in that at last the family has a relatively safe home and a clear path to healing with this accurate diagnosis. Please consider supporting this family as they come together for Jadon’s healing.

You can read the full story of Jadon’s journey below in his mom Wendy’s words:

Jadon is now 13 years old.  It’s hard to believe how the years go by! He was born in Oregon and lived his first 7 years as a barefoot boy running free in the forests and meadows.  His blonde curls and gentle sweet nature captured all of our hearts. At the age of 7, we moved to Washington to start Jadon at a Waldorf school. It was here that Jadon’s health made a down turn when he developed severe headaches 2-3 times per week. We tried numerous doctors, chiropractors and diets but alas they persisted.  Three years ago we moved to Maui, a dream come true, and hoped that a change in environment, school and location would ease his headaches, and it did. We were so relieved.

The most recent and greatest health challenge for Jadon began back in November 2018 when he got a regular cold which turned into Bronchitis and  Pneumonia. It was from this point that Jadon did not seem to recover. He had extreme fatigue, nausea, and intense “ice-pick” pains that would come go and throughout his body.    After numerous doctor visits and tests with no conclusive answers, they decided to run allergy tests. The Doctor was shocked at the results as Jadon was allergic to almost everything, including 5 different types of mold. We then started to question living in a tropical location where mold abounds.

We began contacting mold remediation companies, and a series of fortunate events led us to ‘survingmold.com’, hence we found a doctor on the Big Island of Hawaii who specialized in mold toxicity and the groundbreaking work of Dr Shoemaker.  After extensive blood tests and DNA tests, she uncovered what is at the root of Jadon’s sickness. He was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS).

In a nutshell, CIRS is a genetic disorder whereby Jadon cannot detox biotoxins.  They just accumulate in his body and cause havoc. The symptoms Jadon was experiencing were chronic fatigue, weakness, asthma, rashes, nausea, stomach pain, muscle aches, nerve pain, joint pain, and general nerve sensitivity. This also brought along with it an increasing level of anxiety.

The good news is that it is a treatable condition.  Jadon has now started the Shoemaker detox protocol, and has been prescribed a medication that binds and removes toxins.   However, the first and most important step to this detox protocol was to remove Jadon from exposure to mold. We had our home tested for mold and it was very high.  We moved out at the nearest possible time and the Doctor’s recommendation was to discard all of our belongings due to the risk of cross contamination. With Jadon’s sensitivity we could not risk anything.  The hardest part was boxing up all of Jadon’s toys, games, books and collections. He was so brave and at the same time he was not able to be a part of this clean out.

We moved twice in the hope of finding a home that was dry and mold free.  After testing many places, we could not find a house or a school that was ‘safe’ for Jadon. Having exhausted all our options in Maui, with great sadness, we finally surrendered and decided to leave the island.  Leaving Jadon’s school and all his friends was the hardest part for us all. He still cannot speak of it. His heart was broken.

Where We Are Now

We have relocated to Arroyo Grande, in Central California, to the home of Matt’s parents.  We chose this move to make it financially possible to homeschool Jadon and bring him back to full health. This was a necessary step as Jadon missed over half of six grade, and he is not yet in good enough health to return to a normal classroom.  We are feeling very taken care of by Matt’s parents who have been the most amazing support we could ever imagine.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to lead a Waldorf Kindergarten close to our home.  My small salary is our only source of income at the moment. Matt is fully engaged homeschooling Jadon and bringing him back to health as well as working on the extensive mold remediation that is needed for Jadon in our new home. Very few buildings are actually mold free.   While our parents house is providing us with the freedom to give Jadon the care he needs, it has had a few water leaks over the years and needs thorough treatment.

This whole journey has knocked Jadon’s spirits and we spend much of our days trying to lift him up, and restore his confidence in himself.   However, he is already much better. The nausea and body pains have gone, yet there is lingering fatigue and the inability to sustain exercise for any period of time. Some days are good, some are a struggle. The love we all share carries us through.

How You Can Help

We are deeply grateful to have the support of some dear friends who decided to organize this fundraising campaign to support us on Jadon’s healing journey, and we thank each and everyone of you for reading our story and supporting us in any way you can.  We have had many dear friends ask us how they can help. Donating to this campaign is how you can directly support bringing Jadon back to health. The process of diagnosing and treating Jadon has already cost us thousands of dollars. The path ahead, cleaning/treating our home and additional testing/treatment for Jadon, is going to cost us thousands more.  With our present limited income, meeting our daily needs and paying off our debt leaves us with little to no financial resources for giving Jadon what he still needs. So we are humbly and gratefully opening up to the support of our family, friends and broader community to help us make this happen for Jadon. Please find below a list of our past costs and future needs.

Total Costs $30,000
$16,000  unpaid debt of doctor visits, lab tests, medical treatments, mold treatment, mold testing,  replacing personal items, and moving to California.

$14,000  Future costs (as listed below)
$2500 for ongoing doctors visits, lab tests, and medication for Jadon
$650 for large air purifier for main living space of the house
$1500-$3000 in mold testing of our house.
$2000 to mold test and clean our heating ducts and furnace
$400 for a special air purifier for the heating system
$3500 to replace the carpets in our bedrooms and classroom with vinyl flooring (its essentially impossible to remove all mold particles from carpets).
$1000-3000 to replace lost clothing, furniture and other personal items

After 6 months of not playing any sport, or not being capable of much physical activity, we have recently been playing a little basketball with Jadon, albeit for only 15 minutes at a time.  It is so heartwarming to witness, and we can’t wait until he can have sustained energy to take on more activities. To see him giggling and goofing around with some new friends is an image we hold in our hearts, for it is something we have not seen for months.  We deeply believe that he will recover completely and return to vibrant health. We are so incredibly grateful for your generous financial support in making this a reality for Jadon. From the depths of our hearts, we say Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
