Greg McFarlane’s Re-Election for Trustee for Seven Oaks School Division

Good day Sisters and Brothers,

My name is Greg McFarlane and I am seeking re-election for trustee for the Seven Oaks School Division. As a father of two young children, I work hard to do my small part to make a better world for them. My desire is make sure that they receive the necessary skills and tools to succeed. It was this desire which led me to put my name forward and run for trustee for the Seven Oaks School division in 2014 as the Labour endorsed candidate. Thankfully, with the support of my sisters and brothers I was successful in the election. This October I am putting my name forward once again to represent Ward 2 in Seven Oaks Schools Division, and I am grateful to have Labour’s endorsement once again.

Over the last four years, I have been a strong voice for the working people in our division. I am on the Negotiating Committee for all contracts with workers represented by CUPE in my division. During the last agreement, I am proud that we were able to negotiate a fair contract that saw significant wage increases, and made a major change to these workers’ Health benefit plans, including implementing a 100 per cent employer-paid program. I have also chaired Seven Oaks’ Policy Committee and currently serve as a member of the Finance Committee.

I’m pleased to say that we oversaw the establishment of a new Ojibwe/Cree immersion program and, most recently, the launching of the first ever Filipino Bilingual program in the division. I have made it a priority to have a strong working relationship with all of the unions in the division, including the Manitoba Teachers’ Society.

I do my part to make sure that bridges are built and maintained between the labour movement and divisional staff to better support them in their important job of educating future generations. In 2016, I was able to encourage all three CUPE Locals in Seven Oaks to affiliate to the Manitoba Federation of Labour, which, in turn, strengthens Labour’s voice as a whole. That same year I was able to work with the Board and establish a joint partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local (IBEW) 2085 and Plumbers & Pipefitters, UA Local 254. As a result of this partnership, both unions are now teaching pre-employment courses to students in the school division. Curriculum for these courses include modules on labour, labour history, and the importance of political action.

Prior to being given the honour to serve the working families and students of Seven Oaks, I worked as a Red Seal Electrician and am a proud member IBEW Local 2085. I have been a supervisor, shop steward, and executive board member. For years I served as the local’s organizer, which is where my activism and love for the labour movement began. In 2009, I was elected to the Winnipeg Labour Council Executive and in 2011 I was elected their 1st Vice president, a position I held for almost 3 terms.

I have worked on several campaigns for the Canadian Labour Congress, chaired the MFL’ s Young Members Committee, and sat on the MFL Executive Council as Vice President, representing Manitoba’s young workers. In 2015, I was honoured to receive the MFL’s Young Member Achievement Award, and an Award of distinction from the Province of Manitoba as Journeyperson of the year. In 2016 I served as the Executive Director of the Manitoba Federation of Labour, and now as the MFL’s Campaigns and Projects Coordinator. I am also honoured to be an Alumni of the Governor General’s Canadian Leadership Conference.

We all know that to run a successful campaign funding is needed.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Any amount will help my campaign be a successful one.
