911 – Rescue Needed! Good Karma has taken on a high load of medical cases in the past several weeks. Many of these medical cases were surprises to us.
Currently, ¼ of the dogs in our very small rescue are medical cases.
First, we have Leo. Leo was surrendered to a shelter in Texas when his owner moved to assisted living. He was so badly matted that we couldn’t tell if he was neutered or not. We discovered that his teeth were in horrific condition, and Leo needed extensive dental work. This dental work was over $2400.
We also have SIX heartworm positive dogs: Heartworm is so easily preventable, but so expensive to treat. Treatment is not only hard on the dog, but costly in terms of dollars and length of stay. Every heartworm positive dog must stay in foster care for months while they go through their treatment.
Because of the costs and length of treatment involved, many rescues will not save dogs who are heartworm positive or seniors who need extensive dental work. But Good Karma knows they deserve the same chance at life that every other dog does. We know that they don’t deserve to die because humans failed them.
At an average of $800 per dog JUST for heartworm treatment (not including any other veterinary needs like spay/neuter, dentals, or anything else needed), and a dental procedure that cost over $2400, a caseload of this size can destroy our finances in a matter of weeks.
