Our organization and our community are devastated by the loss of a canvasser from our team Anton Carter (pictured). Anton was fatally shot on October 30th, while engaged in political door knocking on the East Side of Detroit. Another canvasser, whose privacy we wish to honor, was also shot and  is currently recovering from gunshot wounds from the incident.
We hope to provide the impacted families with financial support in this most difficult moment. In the case of Anton's family- for funeral costs and care costs for his three year old daughter. For our surviving canvasser, we'd hope to provide her with funds to facilitate her recovery including physical therapy costs.

While nothing will undo the harm that’s been caused we remain grounded in our vision for transforming Detroit into a city where we are all free to thrive together. We know that our communities in Detroit have been divested from for decades and that divestment creates crisis. The gun violence in our communities is bred from this divestment. Far too many families across Detroit feel the devastation of gun violence nearly everyday in our neighborhoods. We will honor these heroes by affirming our commitment to justice and love.
Thank you for standing with our organization in this moment.

Update:

As many of you may know on October 30th of 2018, with less than a week before the 2018 Election, our team at GJN Action and Good Jobs Now suffered a huge loss when two of our Organizing Fellows were shot while going door-to-door talking to voters. One of our Fellows, Anton Carter, was killed while another was injured. Last week after a long and intensive vetting process by GoFundMe, we were finally able to distribute the donations to these families.

With the support of organizations both locally and across the country, we were able to celebrate the life of Anton by paying for his funeral and we were able to raise enough funds to provide a small bit of financial support for his daughter. Through our GoFundMe page and with the help of our friends and allies we were able to provide a small bit of support for our injured team member as she works hard to recover.

During this time of crisis we were able to witness what building a real community built on love and values looks like as our friends from far and wide supported our team and the family of the victims. Together we began the long process of healing and grieving (and working to build power) knowing that people had our backs and we continue that process everyday.

All of us at Good Jobs Now and GJN Action sincerely thank you for your thoughts, your prayers and all of the support that we’ve received in these last few months.
