Support for the Muldrew Family

Hi, I am Bryant Muldrew. In order to write this, I had to humble myself and set my pride aside. Typically, I do not like asking others for financial support; however, the severity of my current financial situation requires me to exhaust all means. Details pertaining to my situation can be found below if you continue reading

-Providing Context-

In 2018, I was working for a nonprofit organization contracted to provide services within Baltimore City Schools. Usually, I have job security from Fall to the end of Spring, but last school year was different. In February 2018, I was told the organization I worked for was having cashflow issues. This meant there was not enough cash in the bank to meet payroll needs. The details of how the cashflow issue arose are unknown to me, but this financial crisis had lasting effects.

For weeks at a time, I worked without pay. Many asked me why I didn’t just quit and find another job. The truth is I didn’t want to abandon the students I had made a commitment to. When I was 24 years old, I walked away from teaching because of internal politics. I told myself I would never do that again. As a result of this moral conviction, I suffered financially. My pay remained irregular for the rest of the 2017-2018 school year. In fact, I did not receive the rest of my pay until September 2018 during the next school year.

Obviously, irregular pay would cause almost anyone to have financial problems. In my case, my financial troubles were amplified by the interception of my federal income tax refund to pay my wife’s student loan debt. As a consequence, I exhausted my savings trying to keep bills paid for me, my wife, and our seven children. After filing an injured spouse claim, I was able to receive my federal refund; however, interest payments and late fees on bills took a large portion of the money. The remaining money was used to acquire a job working directly for the Baltimore City Public School System and to go back to college.

Though the school system job has been steady pay, I took a $6000 pay cut. Consequently, I never was able to fully recover from my financial crisis. I have tried to make extra money whenever the opportunity arose. I survived the summer of 2018 through a part-time job and Uber. Times are tough, but I will be able to make additional income after my school begins its afterschool program.

Nevertheless, I am not out of the hot water yet. Dues to the circumstances mentioned above, I have two maxed out credit cards, unpaid water bills, late electricity bills and more. Before the financial crisis with my former employer, I had savings and I was planning to purchase my first home. I obtained the two credit cards to boost my credit score to move forward in the process. Just a week ago, my family’s van failed the emissions test. The state of Maryland requires us to have the vehicle repaired adding an extra financial burden. After paying February’s rent, I won’t even have enough money to put gas in my car to get to work. Thus, I decided to launch this fundraiser in the hopes that anyone with a heart and the financial means to help will do so.

-Perseverance through Hard Times-

The financial struggles I have been experiencing is just the tip of the iceberg of my troubles. I thank God for the blessings I do have. I pray that others facing similar circumstances find the support they need as well. This experience has taught me true perseverance and I hope I can teach the same to my seven children.

Lastly, I want to say thank you for reading this far. If you can help my family by donating, we would greatly appreciate your support. Please share the link to this fundraiser as much as possible. As I mentioned before, I have tried many different things to make extra money. One of those things is I have launched an online clothing business called Battle Garments  a few days ago. If you cannot afford to donate, consider purchasing any of my products.

Thank you all and God Bless!!!

P.S. I am a real person. I did not add a picture of my family for the sake of privacy and security. You can google my name and find out I used to be a youth organizer a decade ago.
