It is with a broken heart that I share the news of the death of Monika “Prym” Horbatch, daughter of Cole and Heather Horbatch. Prym passed away at West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni, BC on March 21st, 2019. She was only 3 months and 12 days old.

This sweet girl touched the lives of many during her short time with us. She was cherished by her family and adored by all those around her. Prym brought the Port Alberni community together to support a family in need and it was truly amazing to see how far the love for this little girl went. I am asking now for that love to be continued. I am asking for donations again to help give the Horbatch family time to grieve. To give Liam, Marika, and Maeve time with their parents. To help take away the financial burden of funeral expenses. Anything helps and whatever is given is greatly appreciated.

I’d like to share some uplifting news to all of the donors. Heather has been continuing to pump breast milk since Prym passed away and she has amassed a staggering amount. Here is an update from Heather:

Well today I was able to donate 168539mls or 168.539 Litres or a little more than 42 large (4L milk jugs! I have decided that since Prym’s passing that I would continue to donate in her honour. I’m not sure how long I will do it for, as i know when that time comes it will truly mean that Prym is no longer here and not in the other room with her daddy. We were able to go right into the milk bank at BCCH, I was able to see that they are extremely low as well and I was able to help fill a great need. Apparently all the technicians know my name there too!

Tomorrow we will have the chance to know a little more about our baby girl as we are finally able to go through her genetic blood work (the one that was sent to Finland).

With my last donation in February and this one I’ve donated 197.783 Litres!

The following is Prym's obituary. Her family is holding a celebration on April 13th, 1-3pm at Cherry Creek Community Center. Everyone, including their children, is invited to attend.

Monika "Prym" Katrine Horbatch

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beautiful baby girl Prym on Thursday, March 21, 2019 in Port Alberni, BC. Prym was born on December 9, 2018 at BC Women's & Children's Hospital to loving parents Heather and Cole. Prym was a fighter even before she was born. We knew Prym would have complex medical needs, but only recently learned about her very rare genetic condition DDX3X. She overcame countless odds both during her month long stay at Children’s Hospital and while she was at home with her family. She was strong and brave and brought an enormous amount of light and love into the lives of her entire family. She was only with us for 3 short months, but left an impact that will forever be cherished and never forgotten.

Survived by parents Heather and Cole Horbatch; siblings Liam, Marika and Maeve; Great Nanny and Grampie Betty and Jack Fitzpatrick of Fredericton, NB; Great Nana and Papa Marlene and Phil Dietrich of Port Alberni, BC; Papa and Nana John and Patricia Fitzpatrick of Port Alberni, BC; Grandpa Peter Horbatch of Port Alberni, BC; Aunties Lori (Richard) Henri, Kelly (Josh) Shannon, Naomi (Ed) Nicholson, Kailee (Gavin) Carr and honorary Auntie Katherine (Jeff) McGill; cousins Parker, Keaton, Lilly, Asher, Annilee, Maddy, Gwyneth, Aubrie and Henry, as well as a large extended family throughout the world. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at BC Children's Hospital, West Coast General Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House for the compassion and care they provided for Prym. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charity https://www.rmhccanada.ca/; the BC Children's Hospital www.bcchildrens.ca/donate; or the West Coast General Hospital Foundation https://www.wcghfoundation.com/.

We warmly invite families and their children to celebrate Prym’s life with us on Saturday April 13, 2019 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Cherry Creek Community Center, 3720 Moore Road, Port Alberni, BC.

You are our sunshine, our special sunshine. You make us happy when skies are grey. You’ll never know, dear, how much we love you. Please don’t take our sunshine away. Stories and condolences may be left for the family at www.chapelofmemories.ca

Message from Heather:

On March 21, 2019 at 1322, we all said our goodbyes to the most fierce little girl anyone could know. She was soo strong and brave and ohh so lovable. We are at a complete loss as to what to think or do. One thing we do know is that Prym was brought into this world fighting and she left fighting. So we will fight on in her honour. We can’t thank everyone enough who were there for us and cheered us on while Prym was here with us! A sincere thank you to my amazing work family who tried their very best to save our girl.

At the beginning of the month we were informed that her G tube surgery would be postponed as she was going to have her heart surgery on April 18. Prym had just seen her cardiologist on Tuesday and there were no concerns noted and he was pleased with her weight gain and showed no signs of her condition changing but did state that we may start to see some changes slowly. On Thursday morning everything changed... her condition rapidly deteriorated and unfortunately she could not pull through this last fight. She was surrounded by not only the love of her family but by the love of her parents (and nana’s) work family. Prym even had the honour of staff members lining up for her and walk out with us as she started her final journey. Both Cole and I can’t thank everyone enough for trying their very best in hopes for saving her life.

We were given time to be with our little angel and to capture our last precious moments with her that we will cherish for years to come.

Thank you everyone for all the heart felt responses
