Support for Jeru at the lake

$475 of $500 goal

Raised by 25 people in 12 months
A homeless man named Jeru, who was living at the columns at Lake Merritt had all of his belongings trashed by a passerby.  This is to help him replace some of those belongings and also perhaps find shelter

Hi Everyone:

Thank you all so much for your donations. We didn't quite get to $500 but I decided to make up the difference, so I could give Jeru the money a bit sooner. I included a note, which I've attached here.

At the time I went to see him this morning (Friday, July 6th), he wasn't in his usual spot, so I decided to wait. At about 11:30 a.m., a news crew from Channel 5 showed up, apparently intending to also feature him in a story. I talked to their crew for about 10-15 minutes, when he showed up. I gave an envelope with the cash and this note, and I asked if I could also tell his story; which will probably be more detailed than what I imagine the CBS feature might be.

Any way, thank you again to everyone. I feel the $500, while a lot of money, hopefully will help him get some necessities in the moment, while the much greater sum (over $14,000) raised by JJ, might actually help him with longer-term options.

I'll let you know if I have a chance to write his story.

Take care in these strange and perilous times...

Debora

Hi Everyone:

I would like to share a bit of background on how I came to be engaged in this fundraiser for Jeru.

This came to my attention (and the attention of many others), when a fellow named Henry Sintay tossed the belongings of a homeless man, Jeru (aka Greg and Drew), who sleeps at the columns at Lake Merritt, into the lake and the trash. I have been walking at the lake a few times a week and have passed him many times. I have spoken with him several times; he told me his name is Greg but he goes by "Jeru" (He spelled it for me; sounds like "Drew") and he is often sleeping but he has never bothered me or anyone else. There are many homeless at the lake; Jeru somehow became the target of this guy Henry. He seemed like a pretty gentle soul to me, whatever circumstances may have led to his becoming homeless.

The theft of Jeru's belongings took place a few weeks after the BBQ Becky incident (about which you may have also heard), so there has been a huge rally of support for Jeru, partly organized by a guy named Kenzie, who was the original target of BBQ Becky. I first saw the video, before it made the news, because a friend posted it on Facebook. I decided to start a GoFundMe page, with the reasonably modest goal of $500.

I did not know that a guy named John Harris JJ had also started a GoFundMe page and has raised, last time I checked, nearly $14,000. I've been in touch with JJ and he is working with some local organizations to figure out the best way to give Jeru access to these funds (and maybe help him secure shelter), since obviously no one wants to walk around with $14,000 in cash in their pocket. I asked Jeru if he had a bank account; he does not and does not have any I.D., so it might be hard to get an account, though I'm sure JJ will figure it out.

Meanwhile, my fundraising skills clearly are lacking in comparison to JJ, and as of this writing, I am still about $70 short of my $500 goal, so pretty close but not quite there. Almost!. While $500 is also a lot of money to have in one's pocket, it's more manageable than $14K. So, I'm hoping I can convince about 15 or so people to give about $5. Since this update will be sent to people who have already donated, I'm hoping you may have a friend, family member, co-worker or other contact who might be able to spare a few dollars, please forward this to them. And thank you for taking the time and caring. There are so many issues that are so overwhelming these days; it's easy to feel helpless; this is a small action that I hope feels manageable.

The GoFundMe people say it takes about 2 or 3 days to process, so if I can get to $500 in the next couple of days, , hopefully can get Jeru the cash by next Wednesday or Thursday.

I am aware, of course, that this is a band-aid on a huge problem, but sometimes we need to start with the band-aid. Homelessness, the high cost of housing, and the general state of surreal insanity that Trump seems to have unleashed are all the foundation of the situation. But, in the meantime, if your economic circumstances allow, please consider giving $5 (or more) if you wish. You can donate here.

Thanks for listening. I'm also hoping to write Jeru's story, if he's open to it, for my Oakland Voices project.

I have received an email from Go Fund Me requesting the following:

Please update your campaign to include the following information in your story:

A clear explanation of how you know the beneficiary/ies
A clear plan on how you intend to deliver your donations

I know Jru in that I walk past him at the lake several times per week. This past Saturday, June 9, I stopped and introduced myself, and asked his name. I told him I had started a GoFundMe account for him and I would try to have the donations for him within one week.

I plan to deliver the money in cash, in an envelope, and bring someone else to record and verify the transaction. Although, since I may see him on my walk tomorrow or later in the week , I will ask if he has a different preference.
