Gary Helming was a salt-of-the-earth guy. Soon after his twin boy and girl babies
were born prematurely, I chatted with him at a Cub Scout event he was attending with his older son. I asked how the babies were, and his face lit up. “You want to see pictures?!” And with that he went on, gushing about how adorable they were, how strong his wife Andrea was, how great life was. At some point, he stopped and apologized, saying, “I’m sorry, I haven’t even asked how you’re doing! How are things?” I preferred to hear the proud papa continue about his sweet babies, and told him so. And just like that, his face lit up again, and more sweet baby stories were shared.
Gary passed away after a car accident on August 31.
His family, friends and all who knew him, are devastated.
He was a loving husband to Andrea and father to 9-year-old Riley and 9-month-old twins, Walker and Nalani. He was a 20+ year veteran firefighter with the US Forest Service, and was returning home from fighting the Railroad Fire near Yosemite National Park when he passed away.
The families of Riley’s friends and Cub Scout Pack 425 are working together to assist Andrea, Riley, and the twins with all we can do. We would like to invite you to share this GoFundMe page with others who knew the family and want to help.

However, don't be afraid to offer anything you can think of, be it babysitting, diapers, grocery runs, gardening, meal prep, housekeeping, etc, and we'll make sure the message gets to Andrea. It's hard to ask for help when so much is happening at once.
