Help Dentists in Developing Nations Get the Equipment & Training They Need to Be Mercury-Free, Mercury-Safe

In 2013, 140 nations signed a treaty to protect human and environmental health by reducing mercury pollution. Among other things, it requires each nation to work toward a phase down of mercury amalgam in dentistry and a shift toward safer materials.

Transitioning to mercury-free, mercury safe dentistry does not come cheap. Getting the right training and equipment can be a hardship for many dentists practicing in developing nations. Many have reached out to the International Academy of Biological Dentistry for guidance and support – including dentists like Dr. Dev Anand Gupta, who has a holistic dental practice in Haldwani, India.

Not only is Dr. Gupta seeking the additional training and equipment he needs to practice mercury-free biological dentistry. He envisions training other dentists in India and encouraging the growth of mercury-free dentistry in his country.

In light of our contact with dentists like Dr. Gupta, the IABDM has launched the Safer Dentistry World Health Initiative to help dentists in developing nations get what they need to make the switch to mercury-free, mercury-safe dentistry.

Training is the first need – courses in how to remove amalgam fillings safely and in working with biocompatible alternatives. Often, such training is still only offered in more economically advanced countries. Both travel and lodging must be covered, along with the requisite course fees.

Even when they can afford the cost of training, many of these dentists return home to find they are still limited by the expense of obtaining the equipment they need to practice what they’ve just learned. This includes dental air vacs, amalgam separators, respirator masks, protective coverings, and more.

Help us help these dentists follow through on their desire to protect the health of our planet, their staff and patients, as well as themselves.

Any donation you can make, large or small, will go toward providing these dentists with the training and equipment they need. Grant recipients will be selected by a senior committee of past IABDM presidents appointed by the Academy and will be featured on our website,
