Superability Documentary Film

Let's change the national conversation about disabilities

I am making a documentary about my daughter and being her dad, and I need your help.

A little over two years ago my 9-year old daughter died suddenly and unexpectedly.  The nine years we had were magic; some may have thought they were difficult and exhausting.  Those are words I would not use.  Eva was born with superabilities.  She didn't have a voice but communicated in amazing ways.  Eva couldn't walk, but she moved through life with grace.  Eva was told she would never use her hands, but she became an extraordinary artist.  Eva was labeled as a child with a disability; she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.  We saw her with so much possibility.  Then she was gone; and I was utterly shattered.  This should never happen, but there was something bigger to Eva than being my kid.

Eva gave me a voice.  I am making a documentary about our family's journey with Eva, and all the lives she changed along the way.  I want to share the every day impossibilities she overcame; and how she was a teacher, an artist, a comedian.

She taught me how we all have amazing possibility; and she inspired others to find theirs.  A cancer survivor bikes across America.  A folk singer leaves Nashville to use her gift to heal others. A pediatric neurologist with the same diagnosis as Eva bonds with Eva and tells her she is going to college. An occupational therapist who travels the world telling Eva's story, telling others that anything is possible no matter your labeled abilities.  A mom who never considers herself an athlete runs over 3,000 miles and 5 marathons to raise awareness about Eva.  And a father who dreams of being a film maker, but never thought it possible.  Lives changed by a little girl who never had a voice.

Let's make a movie together

I have an incredible production team who is donating 100% of their time, but there are still costs to making a film.  This is not a little production to put on the shelf in the family library.  We have a business plan and strategy to take the film across North America through the film festival network.  By telling Eva's story, we want to change the national conversation about disabilities.  Sure, we all have them; but let's talk about our superabilities, and the amazing possibilities in all of us.

See what Eva's sister thinks about all of this

So here's what $10,000 will do:
* Wrap up pre-production and local shooting
* Finance two extended location shoots (while we are located in Oregon, Eva inspired people all across the United States; so we need to get out there and talk to these folks)
* Finance the installation of a 25-piece juried community art show interpreting the evolution of Eva's art work (which will be part of the film)
* Leverage additional sponsorships and grants that will finance the remaining production and post-production

If we can raise these funds together in the next 30 days, we can keep the dream alive.

Eva changed my life, and I'm certain she still can inspire others.  I've witnessed so many families beaten down by medical and social labels; and their voices are silenced because of the misperception of disabilities.  Let's change that together.

When we wrap this film, and show the film at your community film festival I want you to come up to me and say "I believe in superabilities!"  I will certainly give you one of those magical hugs that Eva used to give me; and together we can start to change the national conversation.  And for me, you are doing the one thing I can't do alone...keeping Eva's story alive.

Check out the tough interview I did about making this film.
