Help us get to Cali to receive the training we need and create a new instructional video about Paddleboarding to bring to youth in Mpls

To all of our family and friends,

We are reaching out to all of you for some guidance and help. In the month of October from the 1st to the 7th we will be heading to California for an event, called Battle of the Paddle, that will be making a huge impact on our business and be a career booster in our lives. As most of you all know paddleboarding as well as teaching and instructing this up and coming sport is our life. Whether you hear us talk about it, see our posts on social media, or even have seen us and say hi at the lakes, this is what we love to do everyday.

It is our hope this October to start taking this business to another level. We are hoping to create an instructional video about paddleboarding that will help us this next summer as we launch our new paddleboard initiative. This initiative is dedicated to youth in the Twin Cities and helping promote a healthy lifestyle. Giving them a new activity to do and experience they will hopefully take with them for years to come.

This trip is an opportunity for us to grow as a company as well as paddleboarders in seeking out national recognition and training which we cannot find here in the Midwest to become WPA (World Paddle Association) certified which will give us the credentials we need to reach this next level.

For the first few days while we are in California we will be in a training camp for the race that we are entering. Battle of the Paddle is one of the Nations largest and most prestigious paddleboard races. We feel as though to be the best you have to challenge yourself and push beyond your comfort zone against the best competition; for that reason we will be attempting a few different races each. This event is our opportunity to achieve such aspirations.

This race will be a great time, no doubt about it, but our main goal is not actually the race itself, but the training we will receive while there and the instructional video footage we will be gathering. Along with this training, the connections, and knowledge that we will gain over the week will help us reach the next level in running our paddleboard company SUP Calhoun. This will help us transform the paddle community here in Minneapolis, MN through development of new programs, races, and future growth in the sport. It is our dream and desire to work with organizations like the YMCA camps and the Boys and Girls Club to create the largest reach within the student population we can.

We are doing this campaign to help subsidize this cost and make this trip and vision become a reality. What we are asking from all of our family and our friends is some help in getting all of this put together. The money donated will help us pay for our instructional video fees and editing, sign-up fees, training costs, WPA certification costs, airfare and board fees. We have graciously already received a donation from our friends in California to put us up for the week and will not have to worry about housing or rental cars! We have paid for our registration fees just to make sure we will be in the race and also purchased both plane tickets, so we are already committed to making this trip happen and can’t wait for your support.

The costs of this trip and experience have added up to roughly $2,300 for both of us combined. This sport as you may all know is not cheap and with that said neither is the training nor the races and board fees. We are not asking for the full $2,300 in this campaign because we want to make sure that we make our goal, we are instead asking you all to help us raise $1,700. However, in the aspect in what we are trying to accomplish for ourselves any further donations would not be unappreciated but would make the reality of this trip more fruitful and meaningful to us.

We have spent the better part of the past few summers spreading “the stoke” of this fun paddle sport and have given all that we can to help people have the best experience on the water as they possibly can. We have also dedicated ourselves to training and pushing our limits daily so that we can be the best paddlers we can be as well. Now its our time to bring this thing that only a few years ago was a figment of our imagination to life and create a youth program that could create a legacy. For us complacency is not an option and we have been training hard this whole summer for this event in particular along with other sponsored races we have participated in (Waterman’s Paddle for Humanity, Midwest SUP Masters, and Hoigaards Paddle Derby) and are ready physically and emotionally to take this next step.

In closing we just want to say thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts for your contribution to our next adventure as well as your support and devotion to this initiative and push us to the next level of paddleboarding.

Thank you,

Tommy Miller and Robbie Brink
