Great News!

The Sunu Thiossane family is so excited to be invited to take part in a pilot 4-H Youth Development Cultural Exchange with Chesterfield County 4-H Program in Virginia, USA from June 17, 2019- June 30, 2019.

We will take 10 Senegalese youth from different backgrounds and 5 Sunu Thiossane staff members to participate  in this 2 week program where they will develop skills in community building, visual and performing arts, language learning, appreciation of different cultures, and more.

This is an amazing development opportunity for our young people. We are cultivating the future cultural ambassadors of tomorrow.

Ideally, we would like to raise these funds by May 24th. We need your help to make this happen!

WHAT IS SUNU THIOSAANE?
Founded in 2011, Sunu Thiossane is an arts and academic enrichment youth development agency. We provide high caliber arts training to young people across and within various disciplines.

WHY DONATE TO SUNU THIOSSANE 4-H CULTURAL EXCHANGE?
We are fortunate enough to be invited to take part in this exchange. Our accomodations have been sponsored already once we are there. However, we need to raise funds for our flights. Our 10 Senegalese youth have been a part of Sunu Thiossane for several years and exhibit the characteristics that uphold our vision. They have never had the opportunity to travel and this would be an amazing and memorable opportunity,  not  only for them to implement what they have been learning but, for them to begin to see the world!

WHAT WILL YOUR DONATION SUPPORT?
The success of this fundraiser will go towards the Sunu Thiossane's youth and staff airfare tickets.

WHAT MAKES SUNU THIOSSANE UNIQUE?
As an organization, we cater specifically to the demographic and ethnic backgrounds of our participants. Our program has been around for 8 years now and we are still new to the youth development community in New York City but we are making waves in Senegal and facilitating an inspiring cultural arts program to the inner city youth of Dakar. Our purpose is to empower our participants to embrace their own culture through the arts and education. Only then, will they be able to refine their skills and benefit their community nationally and internationally.

SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Sunu Thiossane is a term derived from the Wolof dialect, meaning "our roots and heritage." In 2011, we launched the Summer Intensive Program that had 45 participants, ages 5 – 15. In 2012 The Arts-In-Education Program was launched at Metropolitan Corporate Academy High School for the day and after-school programs and Cultural Empowerment.  2013-14 was a landmark year for Sunu Thiossane, with over 105 young people registered for our inaugural summer camp program (at the Senegalese American Bilingual School in Dakar, Senegal). Our New York City participants were graciously invited to perform at the UN’s event to commemorate the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Students used the year’s successes to facilitate communication between all of the children that we serve (in New York and in Senegal) to create dialogue on the similarities and differences in their lives. We continue to create and improve our platform for substantial change.
