Summer Writing Camp Scholarships!

Donation protected
We're raising scholarship funds for amazing Riverside middle and high school students who are aspiring writers to attend and participate in "Writing is a Superpower!" -- a creative writing workshop held at Cellar Door Books and taught by Rachelle Cruz.

A short description:
During this workshop, we'll write our origin stories; discuss and create our own archetypal characters; imagine and build words for our own stories; practice point-of-view and more!  We'll end the workshop series with a publishing party with participants' writing included in an anthology.  Each participant will receive a free anthology.

The workshop is five weeks long in the summer, starting on June 21st and ending on August 3rd.  We'll need to raise the scholarship funds by May 31st.  Scholarship spots will be gifted to local Riverside middle and high school students who are from underserved schools.

Where the money will go:

$5,000 -
1.) Transportation (Riverside Metro bus passes) for student participants;
2.) Tuition for 10 students;
3.) Writing supplies (paper, pens, and pencils);
4.) Professionally printed student anthologies;
5.) Snacks and complete lunches for each writing session;
6.)....And the final publishing party, which will include refreshments!

Workshop Description:

What is a superhero? Are all superheroes ‘good’ and pure of heart and motive?  What is a villain? How are villains labeled, and by whom? From Marvel’s Black Panther and Ms. Marvel to Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe, heroes, villains, superpowered creatures, and everyone in between are everywhere, from page to screen!  This summer, we will read epic stories and poems and write our own. We will revise our writing, share in a safe, comfortable setting (what better place than a cozy bookstore!), then end our program with a published anthology and celebratory reading of our work.  We will leave as published authors with books to share our imaginative characters and astounding worlds with readers who will be transported to new sights and sounds by our stories. Now, which superpower can come close to that?

For parents, this course will prepare your students to learn and practice the following: pre-writing strategies such as brainstorming, idea refinement, and organization; writing narration (a skill that is hugely useful for writing college application essays); developing characters and landscapes; world-building and speculation; writing rich, effective sensory description; peer-editing; giving peer feedback; and participating in the revision process.

Students will receive:
20 hours of instruction and writing feedback with an MFA graduate and a published writer and editor of multiple poetry collections, an anthology and a comics textbook;
A supportive and safe writing community with a small group setting of no more than 20 students;
A light, daily snack; and lunch;
All necessary writing materials and resources;
A published anthology at the end of the program;
A publishing party and reading to celebrate your writing!
