Hello, I am Mudiagan Fashe,
My team and I are passionate about engaging and inspiring young people. We run a Youth Summer Camp (Next Generation Summer Camp) for youths aged between 10 to 16 years old during the holiday period. This year we are expecting 40 young people and 7 adult volunteers to attend. Most of theme come from deprived areas of London, including Barking & Dagenham, Southwark and Lewisham.
We would appreciate any donations you can make to ensure that no one who wants to attend is denied the opportunity due to financial constraint. Besides this camp, some have never been on holiday before as their parents are unable to afford one.
Here are the details for the Summer Camp:
1. Aim:
- to provide an educational/inspirational, trip with fun and entertainment for our young people.
- to excite, challenge and build their confidence which will have a positive impact on their physical and mental well being
- it is also our aim to wet the participants appetite for higher learning and make them realise that University places in Ivy league Universities like Oxford is not beyond their reach.
- to provide an experience away from their local community and home where they can meet and network with other young people in a safe environment and to keep them off the street.
- to help discover, draw out and nurture the natural talents they have and to positively influence them to set and achieve higher goals for themselves
- to train and equip young people by providing career advice, support and life skills to enable them deal with the challenges of life and grow into well rounded adults
2. Rationale for the event:
The event is geared toward inspiring young people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community to raise the standard of their aspirations to become all that they can be in life. The trip involves a visit to some of the Oxford University Campuses where BAME are grossly under represented.
"Nearly one in three Oxford colleges failed to admit a single black British A-level student in 2015, with the university accused of “social apartheid” over its admissions policies by the former education minister David Lammy."

3. Cost:
The trip costs £150 per person over two and half days.
We hope of raising funds through this campaign to enable us to subsidise the fees to be paid by delegates.
4. Feedback from past participants and parents:
This programme has been running for 4 years now, and the feedback has been positive, with participants parents testifying to a positive change in outlook and academic work ethic of their children who attended the Summer Camp. One parent stated:
" My son had no interest in going to University and had always made this clear. His only interested was in sports. Three years ago, he attended the summer camp where he was inspired by the visit to Oxford University. He realised that even as a young black man, he too could study at a prestigious University if he worked hard and he did not need to give up sporting interests to do this. When he came home his attitude to his studies changed and he worked hard in school to improve his grades. I am happy to say that he has been offered a place in Medical School at Kings College, London and will be starting this September."

6. Agenda for the event:
. Career fair where various professionals (doctors, lawyers, politicians, academicians, nurses, police and fire fighters) can provide career advice and instill in them a thirst to aspire to achieve their goals
. Educational lectures including study tips a by a professional coach/educator
. A tour of Oxford University Campuses and the City of Oxford
. Ice skating, a trip to the cinema/museum and other team building and sporting activities
7.Staffing: Nextgen has developed a core group of volunteers from within the BAME community who are enthusiastic, trained and who continue to develop practical approaches to overcome attitudinal, social cultural, economic and organisational barriers to engaging of BAME communities in mainstream life. We will also be drawing on the goodwill of participating professionals.
All our volunteers will have been security checked (i.e. DBS). Attendees below 10 year old can attend if accompanied by an appropriate adult. .
8. Disability and additional needs:
We cater for people with disabilities/ additional needs but parents will need to advise us before hand and each case will be accessed individually based on the training levels of our volunteers. There is provision for an adult carer to attend at half price if required. The venues we select would always have wheel chair access and ramps, and disabled bathroom/toilets.
