Peace Begins in Me - Al salam yabda'a mini Ana  (السلام يبدأ مني)

Peace Begins in Me is a project aimed at creating a safe and creative environment for children to heal and reach their full potential.  Some of the children who take part in the project come from difficult and violent backgrounds and are separated from at least one parent due to violence or the political situation in the area.  Our intention is to create an environment for children from the Bethlehem area to come together and feel safe and to make our time together playful and full of transformative learning and growth.

For the past few years we have been supporting children through summer camps, bringing them into a natural, safe, fun environment away from the concrete and grayness of the refugee camps. Using the methods of non-violent communication (NVC), we remind children of their basic communication tools focusing on feelings and needs, self-expression and finding healthy strategies to meet those needs, teaching life skills for reaching across differences, resolving conflicts, and building long-lasting, meaningful connections. They learn how to listen not only to others but to themselves.

Our aim is to reach around 50 kids, who will journey 2-3 times a week after school (and some weekends) with a team of NVC professionals, social workers and youth leaders. Children will be provided with a healthy meal every day. Some meals will be provided by the project and some will be prepared by parents as a way for them to contribute and feel connected to the project.

Activities include: nature walks, gardening, cooking, pottery, theatre, art and movement , a weekend hiking program "Let me Hear You" (workshops for the most vulnerable to help build resilience through contact with nature, movement, learning to use maps for orientation in the woods, finding their voice).

Program start date: c. 23 February 2020

Duration: 3 months

Who: 50-55 children aged 7-16 (from SOS village Palestine, Dheisheh camp, Enad theatre) The older kids will start to build skills as youth leaders and help to look after the younger kids. Muslim/Christian children working together.
