Sue's Cabin at Storyknife

Donation protected
In December of 2017, beloved mystery writer, Sue Grafton passed away. A #1 New York Times-bestselling author, Sue Grafton published in twenty-eight countries and in twenty-six languages—including Estonian, Bulgarian, and Indonesian. Books in her alphabet series, beginning with A is for Alibi in 1982 and most recently, Y, are international bestsellers with readership in the millions. She is known for her spunky heroine and her dedication to representing strong and interesting female characters.
.
Dana Stabenow, a mystery writer in Alaska, thought that a wonderful way to honor Sue’s dedication to the written word and women writers would be to raise the money to name a cabin at Storyknife Writers Retreat after her. The funds raised would build Sue’s Cabin at Storyknife, a writing retreat for women writers. Storyknife Writers retreat will have six cabins and a main house where the women in residence will come together in the evenings to have dinner and form a supportive community.
.
The vision of author Dana Stabenow, Storyknife seeks to support women writers by providing uninterrupted time for development of their craft. In 1989, Stabenow won a residency at Hedgebrook, a retreat for women writers on Whidbey Island in Washington. The profound impact of that residency, and the fact that Hedgebrook receives many more applications than they have spots to host writers, has inspired her to develop such an opportunity for women writers.
.
For the past three years, Storyknife has been holding residencies in the one cabin that is currently built. This year, 97 women applied for a chance to spend two-to-four weeks writing their hearts out at Storyknife. We can only accept three. But it breaks our hearts to not help more than that. When all six cabins are built, Storyknife will be able to host 42 women that first year, and then more each year after that. Imagine spending a month writing in Sue’s cabin, inspired by her persistence, her spunk, and her imagination.
.
We are hoping to raise all the funds this year so that we can start building right away. We already have funding secured or pledged for five of the six cabins. Let’s raise this last bit to name one after Sue Grafton. Learn more about Storyknife at www.storyknife.org .
