Strong Like Lindsey

Many probably already know Lindsey and many are fortunate to know her better than me. For those who do not, I will try to share some background on this incredible person with the understanding that I will not be able to do her justice, but will try.

Lindsey Rose is an energetic, brilliant, strong-willed, wine-loving, passionate 27 year-old woman originally from Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2010 and spent the next 2 years serving with Teach for America as a 5th grade teacher in North Carolina. She then started medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in August of 2012, when I was lucky to meet her as part of a seven student rural scholars program.

There are a few things that struck me about Lindsey when I first started interacting with her.
1. She commands a room in a way that only a former 5th grade teacher in an underserved community would be able
2. She is incredibly physically fit and inspiring about the importance of being physically active
3. She is contagiously passionate about becoming a physician and improving access to care for the rural underserved in North Carolina

The following post is one that Lindsey shared on her Facebook and that describes what has happened in the recent weeks. Lindsey's incredible strength has been profound over the last month. She is determined to heal and to then fulfill her dream of healing others, which she will surely do.

The funds raised on this page will help offset personal and medical expenses. I've also loved talking to Lindsey about her plan to use this money for a therapy dog in the future, which could be an incredible gift of love from those that give support on this page.

Updates will be shared here by Lindsey, family and friends as time and healing progresses.

"On Jan 27th, I had a skiing accident which broke my spine as well as a couple other bones. I lost function at T7. That means I am paralyzed from 2 inches above the bellybutton and down. There is a possibility that I will regain function, but this will be a very long recovery. I am currently in Atlanta, GA at Shepherd Center which is one of the best spinal cord injury rehab centers. I am extremely fortunate not only to be here surrounded by amazing and inspiring people, but to be alive. Thankfully, I was wearing a helmet, which saved my life.

Additionally, while I will not be graduating from medical school this year as planned, I will graduate next year. And will continue to pursue my dream of being a family physician. I just wanted everyone to know that I am doing just fine, great actually! I'm working hard to gain more of my independence, spending most of my days exercising (these exercises are much different than before), and continue to be so thankful for the amazing friends and family that I have. Everyone has been so supportive. I can't thank everyone enough!!! I have never felt so very loved!

Many have asked where to send cards, the address is below.

Thank you everyone for your support and love."
