Strengthen Our Sisters, one of the largest shelters for victims of domestic violence, rape, incest and homelessness, and their children, is in danger of closing this year for lack of funds! Strengthen Our Sisters was founded in 1987 by Sandra Ramos, a former victim of domestic violence. At 177 beds, it grew to be the largest women and children's center in Northern New Jersey, offering the most programs for recovering, regrouping, and rising from the traumas of domestic violence, rape, incest, and homelessness.
In 2012, this 501c3 shelter saw all of its government funding cut off for refusing to turn away female victims and their children or throw them out per governmental guidelines if they were not strong enough to leave or had not yet secured safe, adequate housing.
For four years, Strengthen Our Sisters has been run, without funding, by a twenty-two women staff. Many of its programs were shut off, including a computer lab.
Its two licensed pre-schools and day care programs, which aid the women in getting back to work knowing that their children are safe, are in danger of being closed.
The volunteer staff, who are all spread thin, have no time to cook for themselves so they eat one meal at the end of their shift.
All of the bills, including basic utilities, are in danger of being cut. The shelter has a shuttle for bringing the women and children around, but the insurance is now behind and the gas is paid on tab with a local gas station.
