The Need
While poverty and homelessness contribute to hunger issues in our city, food insecurity – being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food – is far more common, wide-reaching and difficult to address.
A number of soup kitchens address the need by serving a variety of meals, providing nutrition, support, dignity and a sense of community. These kitchens, as well as their dedicated staff and volunteers, need help.
The Opportunity
Caterers, vendors and restaurants want to donate excess prepared product but don’t have the time, transportation or manpower. Companies, grocery stores, small farms and vendors at the West Side Market want to donate produce but face the same challenges. Enter Stone Soup CLE.
Stone Soup CLE
Named after a folktale that reflects cooperation, especially in scarcity, Stone Soup CLE connects people with produce, product and prepared food – reducing waste and creating healthy meals for the people who need them most.
We will use start-up funds to purchase industrial-quality freezers, secure a kitchen facility and obtain 501c3 status. Additional funds will raise awareness, develop a recognizable brand and begin a marketing campaign.
Who We Are
Chef Giovanna Mingrone is the founder of Stone Soup. A restaurateur, educator and consultant, she has developed close relationships with food distributors, volunteers and food donors. A dedicated Board of Directors includes food vendors, chefs, legal counsel, development professionals and West Side Market professionals.
